Polls in Colorado and Massachusetts Support Pot Legalization

Two of the most progressive U.S. states when it comes to cannabis legalization offered further validation of that status based on a pair of polls just released this past week. The polls indicate a plurality of residents in Colorado and an impressive majority of respondents in Massachusetts support pot legalization.

Public Policy Polling reported that 49 percent of Coloradans said marijuana use should be legalized for personal recreational use, with 40 percent stating it should remain illegal. Medical marijuana, already legal in Colorado, was supported by over two-thirds of Rocky Mountain residents (68%) with a nearly inconsequential 25 percent in opposition to medi-pot.

In Massachusetts, DAPA Research found 58 percent of those polled supported legal pot and 62 percent backed a theoretical law that would tax and regulate recreational pot like the state does alcohol (Massachusetts has some of the most restrictive alcohol laws in the U.S. – but at least it’s legal).

One interesting dichotomy when it comes to Massachusetts is that, surprisingly, it is not one of the 16 states that have already legalized medical marijuana, even though the Commonwealth harbors some of the most lenient pot laws in the nation.

It could be a case of Massachusetts's famed liberal tendencies being anchored by the general conservatism of the East Coast as compared to the West, which contains the majority of medi-pot states. Despite this pot polarity, 54 percent of Massachusetts residents voiced opposition to the U.S. government disregarding states’ rights when it comes to patients accessing medicinal cannabis, with a mere 35 percent behind the feds' war on medical marijuana.

One troubling aspect to the Colorado poll is that not even a majority supported legal pot, which may not bode well for the chances of a ballot initiative to legalize recreational use passing in November 2012; as Stop the Drug War reported, something along the lines of 60 percent support is the ideal polling percentage to confidently project an initiative winning.

However, if future polls show over 50 percent of Coloradans advocating legal pot, it could sway fence sitters on the issue to vote with the perceived majority. Sometimes conformity can be a good thing.

There are most likely to be 5 to 6 million people who won't express that they smoke pot. Cause they are affraid of perscution. Alot of these people are doctors, lawyers, plumbers, AFL-CIO representives, etc. Who know if they get noticed they could loose their jobs.

People with common sense know it's time to change the laws, cause 40 years of bullshit is WAY TOO MUCH. With alcohol killing 500k people a year, MARIJUANA has to be the better choice, common sense dictates it to be so.

Now who wants to get high?

People actually advertise to sell weed right out in the open. Is that crazy or are the chances of getting busted that slim?

I have known several people who have bought via the mail and it worked out. I have friend who does mail order from Europe all the time. He gets vacuum packed weed in standard business envelopes and pays only after the weed is received. Can't beat that.

The war on drugs is a joke with a pitifully painful punch line. It would be funnier if all the jails weren't full and people weren't starving as they can't find work.

I have an idea, let's find a plant that can grow anywhere that could open up dozens of new industries and create millions of jobs. If only such a marvelous plant existed.

Ya ever notice some people seem like they are always on LSD (ACID,sid,trips, etc) 24/7, Cause some of the decissions they make never make any sense. It's like they are retarded or something. If after 40 years of bullshit and you ain't figured it out by now then you really need a reality check, CAUSE "YOU" ARE OUTDATED".

I've always wondered what people think is going to happen if they do legalize MARIJUANA. I guess they think our whole world will fall-a-part or turn to shit. It will most like become alot less problem to deal with than alcohol. And alot easyer to control & regulate.

Alcohol in my book is 10 times worst than MARIJUANA/Pot/weed/reefer/a fatty/a bad one/the devils weed/a left-handed-cigarette, etc.

I like others have done SOME really stupied things on alcohol, things I'd never do on weed.

Now stick that in your pipe and smoke it, W O R L D !

I say the way to freedom is for the OWS to become the political party Occupy America and we just vote it out. Everybody just vote out their currant guy and vote in the OA guy 1/2 in November, half 2 years later. It took years for corporations and banks to worm their way in, it only takes 2 election cycles to get them out.

If the OCCUPY AMERICA PARTY puts support behind Ron Paul PAUL-itics will get us there.

The reason marijuana is illegal is to protect the big pharma and other industries. Just think no need for pain meds, depression meds, sleeping meds, help cancer patients eat & controls the sickness brought on by chemotherapy. Did you ever see someone on pot go crazy and freak out and try to hurt anyone? Not. Oil from the seeds, food, and clothing. The uses are limitless. Uncle Sam protects big pharma. I know I work for one.

I AM NOT VERY HOPEFULL WHEN THE WHOLE MEDICAL MARIJUANA LAW AND RELATED THINGS CAN BE TAKEN TO THE COURTS AND DECIDED BEHIND CLOSED DOORS BY LAWYERS AND JUDGES WHO ARE NOT ELECTED BY THE PEOPLE.

JUST LOOK AT CALIFORNIA HAVING ITS MEDI MJ PLACES RAIDED BY THE FEDERAL PIGGIES.
