NYC Firefighter Dies After Illegal Grow-House Explosion

A New York City Fire Department battalion chief died in an explosion at a marijuana grow house in the Bronx, officials said.

After reports of a gas leak at the house, fire fighters discovered the operation and called police. Sometime after that, the explosion occurred.

Chief Michael Fahy had worked in the department for 17 years, officials in New York said.

Seven police officers were injured in the blast as well, among others.

The tragedy is another example of the societal costs of marijuana criminalization. In states where the weed is legal, grow operations are licensed and regulated.

  1. “In states where the weed is legal, grow operations are licensed and regulated.” That doesn’t mean that there are not illegal and perhaps dangerous grow operations in those states.

  2. I have NEVER seen where a “GROW HOUSE” was a place that would explode, Meth Labs Etc,Yes, Pot houses ? NO! You’d have to be a complete IDIOT for that to happen! GAS is not used to grow pot ! To heat a Cold Building for heat there could be a Dumb ass, WHERE’S this? NY? Not cold yet!

  3. I just read about this explosion on YAHOO…amazing how it totally did not mention the CANNABIS aspect of this incident….

  4. Did the growing cannabis cause the gas leak? I would think a firefighter would just as easily die in a house with a gas leak that was not being used to grow cannabis as well.
