DOES COKE MAKE IT REAL?
Peru's Drug Czar claims Coca-Cola buys tons of coca leaf every year, while the nation's cocaleros gain ground in their ongoing battle to grow their sacred crop.
Wed, Nov 16, 2005 3:53 pm
After more than two decades of steady opposition to US-backed coca eradication in Peru, the traditional coca growers in the Peruvian highlands (known as cocaleros) may finally see their efforts rewarded with an opportunity to industrialize their sacred leaf for nondrug purposes—the central goal of a struggle that has transformed these impoverished native farmers into a potent political force. Along the way, the cocaleros report that coca-eradication projects attempting to destroy their one sustainable crop condemn them to poverty, while crop-substitution programs—generally pineapples, coffee or bananas—have mostly failed because the mountainous soil is not right for those crops, or because the infrastructure doesn’t exist to get them to market in a timely fashion, or because there simply was no demand. A matter of life and death for the indigenous farmers involved, the conflict has often turned violent. As recently as June, at least 20 policemen and cocaleros died in a bloody confrontation over coca eradication in southern Peru.
Over the years, the dead have numbered in the thousands.
And while an official government okay to manufacture industrial products made from the coca leaf remains just out of reach, a recent written comment by the Peruvian drug czar has led three of the country’s coca-cultivating regions to legalize such production, while also apparently answering once and for all the oft-asked question of whether or not Coca-Cola uses coca leaves to make its soft drinks. In January 2005, Nils Ericsson, president of the National Commission for Life and Development Without Drugs (DEVIDA), issued a 10-point statement intended to clarify the country’s position on the commercialization and industrialization of the coca leaf—a contentious issue in a country where more than a million farmers make their living off the plant. In point No. 5, Ericsson wrote: “Coca-Cola, the globally recognized soft drink manufacturer, buys 115 tonnes of coca leaf from Peru and 105 tonnes from Bolivia per year, with which it produces, without alkaloids, 500 million bottles of soda per day.”
The comment—first picked up outside Peru by the Narco News Bulletin — has been roundly ignored by the American press, even after it prompted a string of significant victories for the cocaleros. Shortly after the tragic event in June, and in direct response to it, the governor of the state of Cuzco (Peru’s leading tourist destination, with both the city of Cuzco and the fabled lost Incan city of Machu Picchu within its boundaries) lifted the ban on new coca planting in the state, hinting that if the leaves were good enough for Coca-Cola, they should be good enough for other uses as well. The action immediately brought threats of federal intervention from the Peruvian capital of Lima, but the governor, not to be bluffed, responded that he would simply call for Cuzco’s independence from Peru if the intervention materialized.

2: Most ilegal coca growing takes place in regions that only started farming it on a large scale since the USA (along with Europe, Australia, Brazil, etc) started creating a huge demand for cocaine. Levels of cultivation vary heavily year on year depending on demand and production in other countries (mainly Bolivia and Colombia, which, incidentally, is a word that doesn't have the letter "u" in it)
3: Coke is not "Peru's number one money maker". Peru stands to make at least $10 billion from mineral exports this year, and well under one billion (estimates range $300m - $600m) from cocaine.

Coca is NATURAL FLAVORS
Feb 16 2006, 12:16 pm
The reason no company advertises "we use natural flavoring from the same plant that cocaine comes from!" is obvious!
1) It is the same reason foods advertised as flavored with "marijuana" are banned. Not because of the ingredients, but because it advertises that word.
2) By law, no company in the world falling under global trade laws (except Coca-Cola) can advertise that they use flavoring from the cocaine plant, even though so many do. No one wants to lose the ability to use the cheap and valuable flavors that come from the coca/cocaine plant's leaves. In the interest of human interests, no one wants to encourage a bad habit either. Even in an oblique way.
Coca, and cocaine have a longer and more officially documented history of research and use than marijuana. It's uses in food and drinks are protected by deep layers of complex laws and never talked about in the open, or advertised.
There could be something for marijuana advocates to learn from how coca is legally bought/sold/used/consumed by the USA.

if this is true, why would anyone be upset with marijuana-flavored candy if it has no THC?
Coca is NATURAL FLAVOR
Feb 16 2006, 11:45 am
coca = the name of a raw leaf native to South America that by nature contains vitamins, a variety of flavor, and cocaine.
cocoa = a bean native to Africa that chocolate comes from, which contains caffeine.
Coca-Cola is not the only company that uses flavoring from the coca plant.
The coca plant is one of the most flavorful plants on the planet.
Once the coca arrives at the only legal coca processing facility in the United States (in New Jersey), it goes through a perfected process to remove the natural flavorings. The byproduct of this is cocaine, which is sold to pharmaceutical companies.
That leaves the 14 flavor essences and safe, decocainized coca leaf.
The 14 flavor essences are separated out and sold to soft drink and food companies.
The flavor goes into hundreds of different varieties of foods Americans eat.
Some of the flavors have special names to keep people from understanding where the flavor comes from.
The FDA then further allows masking of the fact by allowing the coca flavoring to be lumped under the ingredient listing "Natural Flavors".
Imagine that. Not only Coca-Cola, but literally HUNDREDS of food products are purported to be flavored with decocainized coca leaf flavoring.
It's totally safe, but because of the continous drug war, it has to remain hidden under several layers of information so as to not alarm the public.
Also, no one can use the word "coca" in advertising except Coca-Cola (the lone exception).
Any company under US jurisdiction by law cannot say they use flavoring from the cocaine plant, even though hundreds of companies besides Coca-Cola do.
They have to use the name of the individual coca flavor they're using when filing with the FDA, which then gives them permission to put it under the "Natural Flavor" in the government's nutrition/ingredient label.

Coca cola recieves real cocaleaves. But these leaves a first decocanized.
So there whil get no alcolides in the coca cola.
But the Mate tee our rum with coceleaves (3 monts) gives the real ful 9 alcolides that are in Coca leaves.
One of them is cocaine.
Only a few .000%
The other 8 alcolides a very special for al kind of things.
In 1870 the pope was drinking Vin de Mariani.
Boredaux wine with an cocaleaves alcohol extract.
This was in Europe a drunken by almoast everyone.
Why it stopped? Must be the the fucking Americans rules on cocaine stop.
I to hate cocaine users but not that stuppid as most here to be begative about the cocaleaves. A plant of God and not some synthetic produces poison as cocaine is.

Tobacco was given as a portion of the meal ration to U.S. troops at one time.
Now the costs of treating the addiction, and debilitation from nicotine such uses are outrageous. The U.S govenment wishes to collect money against future health claims in the form of payroll deductions, or Medicare but they then wishe to deny culpability when a person is sick with cancer from the tobacco use. The same process happens with companies.
Soldiers were drafted against their will and exposed to many toxic substances, thus shortening their lives.
The gov. response is to thus far limit/deny reperations for any exposure to compounds that they wish to regulate or distribute.
Let's be Frank? (Or Bob). If the lawyers of the one remaining Super Power decide that they wish to restrict the use of the coca leaf and only apply it for medicinal or (restricited) commercial use then ........
A bunch of native peoples will either starve or move.

Trying to replace coca farming with coffee, or banana production, is just a way of controling the land and production processes of the poor farmers. By forcing them to produce something that is already in abundance and thus has no viable market, then they are trying to take their land. If they can't sell their government mandated crop then they will either starve or sell their land for next to nothing.
In the U.S. they are trying to destroy the production of tobacco, and in S. America it's coca and marijuana. The thing that really gets me though is the U.S. government really has no business in telling another sovereign country what it may or may not produce. If a country stands up to the U.S. feds then their government is declared to be "leftist" and "communist". This then sets the stage for a coup which will install a right wing government willing to kowtow to the U.S. government, and by proxy American businesses.
This process has been going on for many years. Where I live corn was the only major product that could be grown (other than tobacco). The surplus of corn was such that many turned it into liquor (moonshine) to sell, in order to feed their families. The liquor was outlawed, and the people imprisioned.
The same thing is happening in Peru. It's about control. The feds are afraid that if they allow the poor people a chance to produce their own product for consumption, or sale, then they will be less likely to work producing other things, or for other companies. Including coca-cola. They can produce a crop that generates wealth for the family or tribe.
Killing people for growing a native plant is wrong.
Poisoning millions with caffeine and high fructose corn syrup must be OK though.
Just my 2 cents.

I think that if the coca-cola company can use coca for other things that aren't cocaine, then so can anyone else.
A study should be done and the benefits of the coca leaf should then be determined once and for all. In Cuzco, travelers are given a coca tea to help aleviate the affects of the thin air in the Andean mountains. That doesn't mean people are getting high off the tea, therefore making it a very beneficial product.
I support the Cocaleros of Peru, and hope that soon things will improve for them. Heads of state shouldn't be so close minded about "drugs".
