Chicago Bans Marijuana-flavored Candy

Chicago on Wednesday became the first big city in the nation to ban the sale and manufacture of "Pot Suckers'' -- marijuana-flavored candy tailor-made to lure young people into experimenting with drugs.

The preemptive and trailblazing crackdown was sponsored by Finance Committee Chairman Edward M. Burke (14th), who argued that the "hideous candy,'' has only one purpose: to groom another generation of drug addicts.

Endorsed by rapper Snoop Dogg

The hemp-flavored candies, which are made in California, have been found in 43 New York City stores and a handful in the Chicago suburbs and Downstate.

None have turned up yet in Chicago stores, but Burke isn't taking any chances.

"If we need any other reason to vote in favor of this, it's now being endorsed by [rapper] Snoop Dogg,'' Burke said.

"They advertised the product -- the marijuana-flavored lollipop and gumdrop line -- with claims every lick is like taking a hit.

"Snoop Dogg wants all of our kids to buy this product.''

The rapper's apparent endorsement was enough to scare the daylights out of Ald. Walter Burnett (27th). Burnett has a 9-year-old son who is a fan of rap music in general and Snoop Dogg in particular.

"I've got to tell you, a lot of the young children are very influenced by rap music.''

let me say something.i love weed but if it didnt get me stoned i wouldn't smoke it. it tastes like burnt rags. "to groom another generation of drug addicts" see now pot has been around for centuries, the Native Americans used it before their land was taken. So how can you possibly say that the THC-free hemp candy is going to bring about another generation of addiction. Hemp is legal to buy at Wal-Mart in huge rolls because its NOT marijuana. If people are going to write about a topic they should really get the true facts before the people's freedom of choice is taken away. I doubt that when Snoop Dogg decided to endorse the candy he thought of all the 9 year old kids out there that are going to walk into a head shop and buy the lollipops...no you moron he did it for the potheads. I'm pretty sure I smoke weed regularly and I don't do it because it's "Forbidden" that's bullshit. Weed isn't as bad as everyone thinks it is. Honestly how many news stories have you heard of that consist of teens dying of a weed overdose? That's right..NONE you CAN NOT overdose on weed. The only way you can die from weed is if you do something retarded like jump from a high building. I have seen more teens my age die from alcohol then die from weed. I think the candy is just a way to advertize weed...but why not...ciggarettes are just as bad for you as weed is and I see commercials about ciggarettes everyday that some little kid could be watching.

Candy that represents a mood altering substance is irresponsible and stupid - including cigar an cigarette candies. Banning candy is also irresponsible and stupid. I don't believe parents should leave it up to "law makers" to "protect" children. Parents need to educate their children about the pro's and con's of marijuana. So that when the children become responsible young adults, they can decide for themselves if they want take the legal risks (which FAR outweigh any other risks - besides gaining weight from the munchies).

I would just like to say that any company who markets candy to kids on the sole premise that it is similar to an illegal substance is just looking for trouble in America. Grant it, there are very liberal states in the U.S. that would allow this, there are even more who don't want there kids buying things like this. As an adult, I would be interested sampling a couple of licks but I would surly not buy such an item in a continuing basis. I love my teeth.

To those of you who would say that they can't see the sense in people making such a fuss about this: I say that you must be smoking a whole lot of good herb. Open your eyes and look at the big picture.
