Polls Show Prop 19 Losing Ground One Week From Election Day

Mon, Oct 25, 2010 3:22 pm

Share |

A new Public Policy Institute of California poll shows Proposition 19 - the measure to legalize pot possession among adults in the state - trails 49% to 44%, a trend seen in many recent polls on the issue. A Field Poll taken last month had the Proposition up 49-42%.

Neither side seems to have the money to run television ads, and experts say most people have their mind made up on the issue anyway. Prop 19 is by far the most visible question on the California ballot this year, and has attracted worldwide attention as it would be the first place in the United States to legalize cannabis.

Those who favor Prop 19 are engaged in firing up their side, as are the opponents of the measure. This Tuesday will mark one week from election day, and the issue is considered by most observers to be a toss-up. Voters in California go to the polls November 2nd.

The damn thing didn't pass because the small growers, the recreational users and the med users used their "heads" in this. Prop 19 was full of holes, full of false "give me liberty or give me death" promises, and basically full of sh*t. Go ahead and write a better one boys, because we don't even know that the corporations won't take over. I talked to my friends who are small growers and users, and they all voted no, so it wasn't just the older crowd. If you are worried about getting thrown in jail, that's another scare tactic put out by the boys of Prop 19 who say that the jail is full of innocent people. I say it's full of stupid people...so write another Prop, and make it so people will have more guidelines for its useage in the workplace (not a good idea), and its useage for people who are driving (not a good idea). Because from where I stand, and yes, I have used it, you have to be smarter and not as stupid as you think the rest of us were to fall for it.

only california - the land of fruits and nuts - would pull off such a stunt of trying to legalize a dangerous substance such as marijuana. wtf is next? legalizing capital murder?

you couldnt pay me an a-list actors salary to live there. california should have its statehood revoked. better yet, california should break off from the rest of this country and float away in the pacific ocean.

consider this:

of prop. 19’s two objectives, california has already independently achieved one--allowing possession of 1 oz with no criminal record, no arrest, no jail time, and no loss of student financial aid—and there’s no restriction on who we buy it from. (this is thanks to the governator signing SB 1449, which downgraded possession of 1 oz to an INFRACTION, a la driving above the speed limit.)

the only other thing prop. 19 proposes to do is give us the right to grow in a 5x5 space--while simultaneously giving local governments the power to impose such exorbitant taxes you can't afford to grow legally. (the city of rancho cordova has already proposed a $15,000 annual tax on your 5x5 home-grow for personal use if prop. 19 passes. wanna grow in a 10x10 space? that'll cost you a whopping $90,000 per year if you live in rancho cordova. other conservative cities are following suit.)

and since prop. 19 would otherwise just create more prohibitions--and more reasons for police to be out enforcing those prohibitions--such as the ban on smoking in public (currently legal under prop. 215), the ban on parents, patients, and all adults smoking when anyone under 21 is on the property or at the party; the ban on possession of cannabis that was bought anywhere other than a licensed dispensary, and the ban on lighting up with other adults age 18-20--if you still want to vote for prop. 19, i'd sincerely like to know what you're smoking.

sincerely,

i am not from california,i really had my hopes up that calif. would pass this prop so other states would follow, but between the mony making growers and propaganda passing prohibitionists i now know that it will fail. i am so tired of being labeled a criminal to the people who think an infraction is good its not you pay a fine but it wont keep u from losing a job if it were legal companies would have at least had to prove u were on it at the time of the test not what u did 3 days ago. this was more than just legalization it was to show the govts. that we are free and have personal choices and freedoms maybe another state wont be scared to vote yes for all u greedy growers who vote no go to hell

For 1 i didn't say that they would "take over" entirely. And i didn't say that people would not grow it so get your head out of your ass and listen. I was merely stating that there is going to be a big profit for them and they will jump in and take that opportunity making it harder for the smaller growers to make money whether low grade or high grade people will smoke pot and when it is legalized there will be people that can't grow or doesn't want to grow in which case there is their profit. And plus come on bro i have been doing this shit for over 13 years and if you are only allowed a 5 x 5 space with no extra veg room how are you going to set up perpetual and plus the average grower along with the newbies can only pull of a couple ounces per harvest with that space. and if you are a smoker especially a recreational smoker you will run out before your next cycle is done in which case you will have to go to the store and buy what you need. So again there is some more profit for them. So who feels retarded now sure as hell not me douchbag peace

That was a stupid post Richard Saunders. We're not in the 1930's anymore for one thing. Most are a lot more educated about marijuana now than people in the 1930's. Anti-pot propaganda doesn't work anymore. For those against Prop. 19, you're going to have to live with legal marijuana whether you like it or not. Deal with it.

The marihuana cigarette is one of the most insidious of all forms of dope, largely because of the failure of the public to understand its fatal qualities.

The Nation is almost defenseless against it, having no Federal laws to cope with it and virtually no organized campaign for combating it.

The result is tragic.

School children are the prey of peddlers who infest school neighborhoods.

High school boys and girls buy the destructive weed without knowledge of its capacity of harm, and conscienceless dealers sell it with impunity.

This is a national problem, and it must have national attention.

The fatal marihuana cigarette must be recognized as a deadly drug, and American children must be protected against it. - The Washington Times, 1930's

if it passes and big tobacco thinks its gonna take over the cannabis industry they are crazy, they don't realize people can easily grow their own at home and get better quality buds then you get when you mass produce in huge fields. kannisbus king chill out, the feds aren't gonna raid shit when this bill passes and millions are growing their own bud, they don't have the resources to raid everyone whos gonna be growing. Plus once they see the tax money rolling in, every state will have it legalized within 2 years.

Kannibus King

Oct 27 2010, 2:55 pm

For 1 the tobacco companies are intending to grow the land was purchased on either side of my families farm by phillip morris reps and i personally talked to one of the and they wouldn't give a straight answer as to why they purchased. Also they have had the land for a while now and it has been just sitting empty waiting for that bill to pass its been in the works for years. Shit they even have product designs already which i have seen as well for malboro and camel 420 brands. And no you won't have any more rights if it passes you still can't smoke in public even though you can possess 28.5 grams on your person. But you better not have 28.6 on you. And by the way you know it is already decriminalized so people can either pay 100 dollar fine maximum if caught or pay 50 for a legal doctors rec and have all the freedom they need. Why push it even further mark my words if it passes the feds are going to start raiding people and enforcing federal law and we won't have any mmj rights recreational or medical. If a better bill cannot be written then leave well enough alone.

Don't believe the hype

Oct 27 2010, 10:47 am

Not as bad as it appears.

The actual polls are all over the place with the automated polls showing the people in favor, and the talk-to-a-person polls showing people opposed. People are more likely to be honest in an automated poll, and be more "people pleasing" intimidated when talking to a live person.

There is some serious media bias in the attention this one poll (an anomaly ) is getting.

I heard a lot of people in the alcohol industry are really opposed to the marijuana legalization. I suspect marijuana could really cut into their profits. Also, many law enforcement agencies/unions are opposed to marijuana legalization as well because it could really hurt their funding as well. Its all about the money! Sad thing is from the avg citizens perspective marijuana legalization just makes sense!

The only poll that matters takes place on Nov. 2. Get out and vote!

As for all the anti-19 fear-mongering, go to Rumor Control at: http://www.taxandregulate.org/prop19anchors.html

No one from tobacco companies is intending to start growing cannabis. This conspiracy theory has been debunked here:
http://blogs.sacbee.com/weed-wars/2010/09/rj-reynolds-snuffs-out-rumor-of-california-marijuana-interest.html

Medical marijuana laws under Prop 215 are great, but they will remain unaffected under Prop 19.

If you make your living growing medical cannabis, then join or start a local organization (like hummap.org,) and start unifying with other small, mom-and-pop growers to establish local regulations that you agree with.

Oct 26 2010, 1:21 pm

Vote no on 19. Legalization is key but not this way. The bill is full of hidden measures and is only designed to benefit corporations. Phillip morris already has over 300,000 acres of land in northern california waiting for that vote and then we as people will be shit out of luck with our skimpy 5 x 5 alloted grow space. It has all this hype about generating revenue but no specifications on who is allowed and nothing about the individuals right to cultivate, sell, and be taxed. I don't know about you but i am from a town where we rely on the mom and pop grows to fuel the town and they will be obsolete if it passes and my town along with many others will become ghost towns. We already have all the freedom we need with our medical laws. With a card you can legally cultivate as much as needed. If you want to smoke it that bad go get a card $50 max. Our officials just need to focus on regulating and taxing medical dispensaries better and we would generate plenty of tax revenue. Keep it organic and pure do not dirty this sacred healing herb with the toxic chemicals, that the commercial growers for Phillip morris and others will be putting in them to mass produce a tobacco equivilent product. And yes attorney general holder did say that if it does pass he will start enforcing federal law here in cali so be ready for that knock on the door when it passes and they take away everything no medical rights or anything. go directly to jail, do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars. The LA county sherriff says the same thing. This will cause a bigger war than there already is and that will be the reason to make it permanently illegal. Reefer madness 2010 civil uprise because of loss of rights and they will say "see we told you, horrible substance that devil weed see its making everyone go crazy and question authority we can't have that." history repeats itself this happened before with the marijuana tax stamp act and it was just a trap to imprison growers because they said they would allow you to purchase a stamp but you had to bring a sample of the produce but here is the catch if you don't have the stamp you go to jail for growing it and you can't get the stamp without growing it first. What they need to do is legalize industrial hemp and that would change the world we wouldn't have to rely on other countries or destroy our earth by extracting oil and cutting trees hemp would solve all of that but again the corporations have the power in that say and it will never happed because oil companies would go out of business, lumber companies would dwindle and hemp related jobs would skyrocket so why isn't hemp in prop 19 which is the "drug" free version. Sorry if this seems a little frazzled ;)

Oct 26 2010, 11:46 am

C'mon California. You have to get it done. You have to set the precedent for the rest of the states. After it's becomes legal in California, other states will see that marijuana is not harmful to society and legalization across the country will soon follow. I hope you California residents accomplish this huge goal.

What do the polls mean anyway? The people will vote and only then will we know how the people really feel about legalizing marijuana. Having the pollsters on TV saying this or that, is a way for big business to have control over our thoughts and decisions. I can remember a while back a huge study was done on cannabis and through the data it was proven that cannabis helped with inflammation as well as shrinking tumors, the people announcing this story seemed thrilled and hoped that laws would be changed for more testing. Then with in a few hours, that story was replaced by one where a police officer ate some pot infused brownies and had to call an ambulance. The news anchor in that story was wondering if the laws on pot were too lax. The point I am making is that big business and the media push their agenda. Wether it be through subject matter in TV shows, to the polls we see being released daily about this or that. People need to wake up, cut the cord and start thinking for themselves. So when Nov. 2 comes and if you have a chance to vote, by all means take it.

The New California Gold Rush starts here. Vote YES on 19. Wipe out the defecit, start building a surplus. So what if the Feds are threatening us? This is the only way that they will listen; a MAJORITY of voters who want a legally functioning and prosperous Cannabis/Hemp industry in California. Make the FEDS take the next step. Other states will follow. Shut down that 60% of the Mexican Drug Cartel's MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR income, and get them out of California, then every other state, until they can no longer make money selling cannabis to The United States when our farmers can grow it better and keep 100's of BILLIONS of dollars funneling throughout our OWN economy.

Oct 25 2010, 4:09 pm

It depends on what polls you look at, the ones that have an automated caller have it winning, probably due to the stigma surrounding the issue. Make sure you vote, because it'l be close.
