When I am in Amsterdam I like to sit in a coffeeshop and watch the people who come and go.

One of the first things that one notices is that most of them do a lot of "take-out" business, particularly late in the afternoon and early evening. Also, it is interesting to note that the Dutch government estimates that at least half of the cannabis consumed by the Dutch is not bought in coffeeshops, but from underground networks, similar to that in countries with full-blown prohibition.

Of course that does not mean that they necessarily smoke it alone. Just as people buy wine to go, and enjoy it at home with friends and family, for most people cannabis use is social – and there is nothing more "social" than sharing a joint or bong.

On my last trip there for the NORML tour in January, I was in the Grey Area, owned by my two American …READ MORE

Technology has changed almost everything in our lives, but most people are not aware of the degree to which it has changed the cannabis world. Most consumers still do what we have always done: apply fire to plant material rolled in paper or packed into a pipe-bowl, just as my grandfather did with Prince Albert (canned tobacco, not Queen Victoria's husband, who never made it to Texas).

Vaporization is still not widely used by most recreational users, and may never appeal to those who only smoke occasionally, but it will have a major impact on the politics of prohibition, because so-much prohibitionist propaganda is focused on the supposed dangers of smoking. That is why the Drug Czar always refers to the plant as "smoked-marijuana,” and their favorite slogan against medical cannabis is "No medicine is smoked!" Okay, so what? Mention vaporization and their …READ MORE

In my last column, I wrote about the violence injected into the marijuana world by the high prices and the ready black market created by prohibition. As sad as that is, it is at least "understandable." There are people who are thieves and they will even steal medicine from sick people. Or they are narks and they will abuse their power… Whatever.

However, the violence of the international drug war has spilled over into the most improbable places, the music world.

Of course, Americans have witnessed the murder of several hip-hop stars and promoters, but the world of "Gansta rap" grew out of a world created by the drug war and the very name "gansta" explains a lot.

Similarly, in Mexico the "narcocorridas" were written about the world of Mexican contrabandistas, which is a very violent world, indeed.

Once upon a time – back in the “good old days” – almost the only violence in the marijuana world was brought directly by the police. Even now, with more than 800,000 marijuana arrests last year, state violence is still the major problem.

Far too little attention is given to the problems caused by the violence of prohibition, which ripples out in all directions when someone is arrested.

Their families and friends are also the victims, especially their children, which is ironic in that “saving the children” is the excuse for the violence.

However, now there are other sources of violence to worry about.

Believe it or not, I really don’t know very many people in the “business”, but even among my acquaintances, I have heard about a lot of violence over the last few years.

Well, my friends at HIGH TIMES may be a bit bleary-eyed today – from jetlag, of course – having just returned from the 2007 Cannabis Cup. I couldn’t make the trip this year, but I know that a trip to Amsterdam can leave one clear-eyed in a more important way. One can see that freedom works.

Unfortunately, there are still those who simply will not see. The prohibitionist party line insists that any reduction in penalties for anything related to marijuana will “send the wrong message,” and inevitably lead to everyone becoming addicted to something. Indeed, we are constantly told that even criticizing the drug war sends the wrong message. That may be why we seldom see anything in the US media about Dutch cannabis policies, unless it is wrong.

For example, earlier this month, the Dutch government announced that it was extending its medical cannabis program for another five years. With all of …READ MORE

In the last week, three things happened that the supposedly “serious” people in the media and politics simply could not fathom.

First, Drew Carey, the very bright libertarian comic/actor, did an Internet video for the Reason Foundation’s Reason.tv saying, “I think it’s clear by now that the federal government needs to reclassify marijuana. People who need it should be able to get it – safely and easily.”

Some of the comments in the entertainment media were breathless speculations on whether this could hurt his career. Well, to take nothing away from Carey, why would it hurt his career to come out in favor of something that is supported by more than three fourths of Americans? By almost any measure, medical marijuana is one of the least controversial issues on the public agenda, but many of the “serious” …READ MORE

“The phrase ‘Won't somebody please think of the children?’ is a running gag on The Simpsons, most often spoken by the character Helen Lovejoy, the minister's wife.”
-From a Wikipedia article about logical fallacies.

The main purpose of the Drug War is supposedly the protection of children, so it is not surprising that the DEA uses a portion of its vast budget to target young Americans with “drug education.”

Just Think Twice is the DEA’s slick new Web site that is desperately trying to be hip, or cool, or whatever. The first thing that one notices is the odd juxtaposition of the link to the anti-marijuana section, which is adjacent to the link to a warning about the dangers of cough medicines, which are sold over-the-counter! In …READ MORE

Greetings! I am going to be writing a bimonthly column for HIGH TIMES, so I should begin with a little history. (When someone is my age, we always have “a history.”)

Forty years ago about this time, I had a better day than Che Guevara. He got killed and I got high.

Actually, it did not occur to me to note the exact date when an old friend asked me if I wanted to “smoke some grass.” I do remember that I wasn’t surprised, even though this was in Fort Worth, Texas and I was 27 years old.

    So what is the point?

First, I have smoked almost every day since then. The “almost” is important, because I have never had any problem quitting for a few days or a month, when I decided to – or when traveling made it impractical.

According to the 1999 Institute of Medicine Report …READ MORE
