Jerry Garcia – the legendary singer and lead guitar player for the Grateful Dead who passed away in August 1995 – would have turned 70 years old today. Jerry was born Jerome John Garcia in San Francisco, California on August 1, 1942. He is widely considered one of the most influential musicians to have ever lived.

In addition to his musical contributions, Jerry had a massive influence on the psychedelic culture of the 1960s as he and his band mates turned people on to LSD through Acid Test parties with Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters. The Grateful Dead are also credited with helping the spread of marijuana genetics across the world as different strains made their way into new territory through Dead tour.
