March 7, 2003 – The 4th-Annual HIGH TIMES Stony Awards began and ended with a bang on Wednesday night at BB King’s Blues Club in New York. Saturday Night Live’s Horatio Sanz accepted the final award of the evening for Stoner of the Year and Phish’s Mike Gordon accepted the first for Best Music DVD.
The sold-out show was a star-studded stoner affair. Legendary columnist and author Jimmy Breslin presented a Lifetime Achievement award to Frank Serpico, Dave Chappelle (also the recipient of a Lifetime Stony) presented the Stoner of the Year award to Sanz, who said, “I feel like Halle Berry. I’m the first Chilean to ever win a Stony!”

Other winners on hand to accept were James Toback (Best Movie, Best Psychedelics Scene), The Simpsons executive producer/writer Carolyn Omeni (Best Television Series), Ram Dass Fierce Grace director Mickey Lemle (Best Cultural Documentary), The Trials of Henry Kissinger co-director Alex Gibney (Best Political Documentary), and One Big Trip executive producer Peter Bittenbinder (Best Movie Soundtrack). The Super Troopers cast (Best Stoner Movie) and Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger accepted by video (Best Original Song in a Movie).

The celebrity presenters included veteran actors Sylvia Miles and Harris Yulin, original member of The Mamas and the Papas Denny Doherty, playwright/director Randall Myler, directors Marc Levin, Gillian Grisman and Alison Thompson, and producers Richard Stratton, Peter Shapiro and Mike Bonfiglio.
