Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon signed a bill that makes K2, or “Spice,” a controlled substance in the state. Those in possession of K2 after August 28 face jail time or fines.

K2 is generally sold as incense in convenience stores and head shops. It contains a synthetic compound that “produces a marijuana-like high when smoked.”

Earlier this month Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe signed an emergency order banning the substance. Missouri is the fifth state to ban K2 (along with Arkansas, Kansas, Kentucky, and Alabama have also banned the synthetic substance). Several other states are currently considering bans.
