  • CONCERT REVIEW: Queens of the Stone Age @ The NorVa – Norfolk, Virginia

The sun sank into the sea as Queens of the Stone Age barreled into Norfolk, Virginia with guns blazing full bore. The Mid-Atlantic leg of the Duluth tour – aimed at intimate, less frequented venues – touched down at the NorVa Theater, which was primed for pillaging as the quintet split the clamor on a blistering “Medication.” The capacity house howled as Josh Homme carried the rhythm section directly into a lethal “Sick, Sick, Sick.” Mid-song, power drummer Joey Castillo didn’t miss a beat with a busted drumhead and minor difficulties aside, the band pounded through the remainder of the song unscathed.

Fans of classic Queens were feverish as Homme nodded to older material hitting home on “If Only” and quickly doubling the punishment on a visceral “Do It Again.” Early in the set, the band was tight as a knot easily traversing the eclectic transitions of “I Think I …READ MORE

  • FESTIVAL REVIEW: Camp Barefoot 2 @ Cove Campground - Gore, VA

Story and Photo by Rev. Zicka-Funk

The 2007 festival music scene changed indefinitely with The Police and Tool invading what had been a jam-centric Bonnaroo. Other once worthy festivals have lent their happy vibes toward corruption and heavy policing, in turn pushing seasoned festivalgoers towards smaller, served-to-order gatherings. This year, Camp Barefoot 2 was the heady alternative to murky mainstream fests, offering breathtaking scenery, world variety and a surprisingly well-rounded musical schedule for a non-corporate sophomore effort.

In 2006, Hey-Bro Productions decided to focus their efforts on creating a small grassroots festival that would average about a 1000 people with approximately 20 bands. Thus, Camp Barefoot was born.

CB2 featured a more extensive line-up than the inaugural festival. “We stepped it up on bands, added more bands than last year, more people. I would like to get bigger but I wouldn’t want to get …READ MORE

  • FESTIVAL REVIEW:

    Thu Jul 26, 2007

    By Rev. Zicka-Funk

If longevity is the mark of a dynasty, then the 11-year running All Good Music Festival and Campout is clearly the reigning king of mid-summer jam music. Boasting one of the top jam band lineups this summer, Walther Productions and a cast of thousands pooled experience, energy and spirit to make this one of the best All Good’s in recent memory.

The first noticeable difference between this year and last was the number of early arrivals, which foreshadowed the most attended All Good yet with festivities spanning 4 nights and 3 days of continuous entertainment, attractions and unforgettable times.

Thursday night kicked off with American Dumpster taking out the trash on the Rope-A-Dope stage. Their gritty swagger, which mashes up raunchy guitar grooves and fat bass with straightforward drum rhythms, had the earliest jammers demonstrating their approval. American Dumpster kicked the heat up a notch by incorporating …READ MORE

  • REVIEW: 10th Annual All Good Festival – Marvin’s Mountaintop, WV

    Wed Jul 19, 2006

    By Rev. Zicka-Funk

Breath taking scenery, enchanted sprawling foothills, and nearly 20,000 smiling faces greeted us as we descended upon Marvin’s Mountaintop, WV, the site of the 10th Annual All Good Music Festival and Campout. The event has built a reputation over the past decade as the Mid-Atlantic’s premier camping and music festival. This year promised to be no exception with a star-studded lineup and plenty of sunshine in the forecast.

Early arrivals were treated to stacked sets by Brothers Past, Virginia Coalition and a special premiere of the Easy Star All Stars’ dub style interpretation of OK Computer, Radiodread, in its entirety. ESAS also played their immensely popular Dub Side of the Moon.

The Friday morning sunrise brought sweltering humidity, but the real heat was emanating from the PA monitors as Oteil and the Peacemakers warmed up the All Good Stage (main). Burbridge took the stage …READ MORE
