  • MOVIE REVIEW: Tribeca Film Festival – New York City, April 25 - May 6

    Fri May 11, 2007

    By Steve Bloom

The 6th Annual Tribeca Film Festival (TFF) in New York featured 157 films and 88 shorts from April 25 to May 6. Here are five TFF faves, in order of preference:

The Third Wave, directed by Alison Thompson
Thompson’s a HIGH TIMES favorite. After all, she directed our feature film, HIGH TIMES’ Potluck (2003). Ten days after the tsunami hit the coast of Sri Lanka on Dec. 26, 2004, Thompson flew to the devastated country with her producer, Oscar Gubernati, hoping to help out in any way possible. They ended up in the washed over town of Peraliya and began to set up a relief camp with just two other volunteers. Thompson’s nursing experience came in handy; suddenly, she was treating hundreds of flood victims with limited supplies. Mostly she patched up cuts; in one case, after a knife fight between two men, she was called upon to apply stitches. Gradually other volunteers showed up and Sri Lankan …READ MORE

  • FESTIVAL REVIEW: New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival – April 27-29

    Thu May 3, 2007

    By Steve Bloom

New Orleans is the kind of place where you can hear quality jazz and eat fresh oysters in the airport. It’s America’s jazz city.

New Orleans is also, due to Hurricane Katrina, America’s most depressed city. But that hasn’t stopped it from hosting the sprawling 38-year-old Jazz & Heritage Festival (a.k.a. Jazzfest). Despite abandoned houses and stores virtually everywhere (except for perhaps in the French Quarter, the tourist zone that was relatively spared by the storm), the show continues to go on.

A drive to the Racetrack Fair Grounds where the festival takes place in the Gentilly neighborhood reminds out-of-towners that New Orleans is in dire need of assistance. During a press conference at the festival, which commenced on Friday, April 27, Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu called for a Marshall Plan to rebuild New Orleans and termed the current effort “dysfunctional.”

  • THE ANGRY LION

    By Steve Bloom

Stephen Marley, Bob Marley’s second son, is smoking a perfectly rolled spliff in his home studio in South Miami. He starts with freshly chopped herb on a cutting board, then adds a “lickle” loose tobacco and twists it up using a long Rizla paper.

“If you don’t roll it right, you get what we call a sore-foot spliff,” he laughs. Of course, he rolls it right. No loose pockets—it’s a cone that would make any Jamaican or Dutch smoker proud.

Marley’s preparing for the release of his long-awaited solo album, Mind Control. Two years ago, an advance CD was sent out called Got Music. But then his younger brother Damian (“Junior Gong”) had a huge hit with Welcome to Jamrock, which won both Grammy and Doobie awards in 2006. Stephen’s own seven Grammys sit atop the studio’s soundboard. He produced both of Damian’s Grammy-winning …READ MORE

  • Movie Review: Factory Girl - More Fiction than Fact?

    Tue Feb 20, 2007

    -
    By Steve Bloom

Hollywood's latest take on Andy Warhol focuses on his temporary muse, Edie Sedgwick, who burst on the Factory scene like a comet in 1965. She's the star of George Hickenlooper's Factory Girl, in theaters now.

The movie is not without its controversies. Bob Dylan has threatened to sue for defamation of character and Lou Reed allegedly hates it. Sedgwick (played by Sienna Miller) arrives from Boston a well-to-do 22-year-old woman seeking attention, glamour and fame in '60s New York City. She's introduced to Warhol (Guy Pearce) at a Factory party and soon begins appearing in his low-budget avant-garde flicks. This is a happy time for Edie, who dresses up like a model and consumes lots of drugs (heroin, barbiturates). Sedgwick's suddenly Warhol's “It Girl.”

The movie spins off its rails a bit when a character based on Bob Dylan (Hayden Christensen) enters the picture. Warhol becomes jealous of their …READ MORE

  • Why the ASA Conference Was Canceled

    Sat Jan 20, 2007

    By Steve Bloom

Just four days before the DEA raided 11 dispensaries in Los Angeles, Pickwick Gardens in Burbank rudely booted the Americans for Safe Access conference, scheduled for January 12-14. More than 200 registrants were not allowed to return on Sunday, Jan. 14, forcing ASA to hastily regroup at a nearby Mexican restaurant. The reason given for the cancellation was pot smoking on the Gardens’ grounds.

Conference attendees included Debby Goldsberry, Ed Rosenthal, Todd McCormick, Dale Gieringer and Jeff Jones. ASA executive director Steph Sherer led the program, which began with an awards presentation on Friday night and continued with workshops on Saturday. I attended the conference on Saturday and did not notice anyone smoking.

In an exclusive interview for hightimes.com, Bill Dolphin, ASA’s communications director, explained what happened:

“While we'd been at the Pickwick for a symposium a couple of …READ MORE

  • TENACIOUS D Concert and Movie Reviews

    Mon Dec 4, 2006

    By Steve Bloom

CONCERT REVIEW - TENACIOUS D Rocks MSG

Part Tommy and part Spinal Tap, Tenacious D's ambitious stoner-rock opera The Pick of Destiny - it's currently in movie theaters and available as a soundtrack cd - came to New York's Madison Square Garden on Dec. 1. For those of you not familiar with "The D," actor Jack Black and his guitar-playing partner Kyle Gass perform as an acoustic duo who really want to ROCK! This requires a band, which they have - electric guitar, bass and drums.

The concert began as an acoustic affair, complete with a stage set of their living room featuring a green plastic bong (it's visible in the above photo). Midway during the set a guy named Lee sat down on the couch and sparked up the bong (Gass joined him). After a brief break, they returned with band and a new set lit red (for hell) with smoking volcanoes and a 10-foot magic mushroom.

The gag is that Tenacious D …READ MORE

  • CONCERT REVIEW: Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Carry On

    Mon Aug 28, 2006

    -
    By Steve Bloom

Move over Michael Moore, you've got company Cindy Sheehan, make some room Bill Maher. Neil Young's coming to your town with his old buds David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash, and he's got a lot on his mind. The aging rocker sounds, well, young again, protesting like did in the '60s and early '70s against the Vietnam War. Now, however, it's the Iraqi War that has him all worked up.

Young's latest album, Living With War, is a broadside against US policies that have provoked wars in Iraq and Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks. During his current tour with C, S & N, he opens the show with "Flags of Freedom," setting the anti-war tone for the evening. Young's clearly the leader of the band, and it's likely he wouldn’t have agreed to the reunion unless his partners allowed him the time to get his message across.

Throughout the show - I attended last Tuesday night's outdoor concert at Jones Beach Theater in …READ MORE

  • REVIEW: Gathering of the Vibes - In Its Eleventh Year GOTV Keeps Alive the Spirit of Seminal Music Fest, Woodstock

    Tue Aug 22, 2006

    By Steve Bloom

Thirty-seven years ago, a little event called Woodstock happened. It took place in Bethel, about 90 miles north of New York City on the Thruway and then west on Rt. 17. I flashed on this immortal event as I drove by signs for Bethel, Woodstock and Saugerties en route to Duanesburg – the site of this past weekend’s 11th Annual Gathering of the Vibes (GOTV).

Now in its fifth year at Indian Lookout Country Club, GOTV is a seasoned event with quality entertainment. Friday's highlights included Assembly of Dust's "Woodstock" encore, versions of "Lovelight" by the North Mississippi Allstars and Martin Sexton, and night sets by longtime GOTV favored band Deep Banana Blackout and newcomers Tea Leaf Green.

On Saturday morning, Zen Tricksters - who were joined by former Dead singer, Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay - christened the day with a rendition of the Beatles' "I Want to Tell You." After G. Love & Special Sauce’s …READ MORE

  • CONCERT REVIEW: Manu Chao & Los Amigos Invisibles Celebrate Brooklyn!

    Tue Aug 8, 2006

    Story by Steve Bloom

From the reggae/punk of Manu Chao to the suave dance music of Venezuela's Los Amigos Invisibles, worldbeat was the musical flavor of choice at the Celebrate Brooklyn! summer concert series in Prospect Park this past weekend.

In a rare US performance, Manu Chao electrified the sold-out audience on Monday night. Chao, who was born in Spain and raised in Paris, alternates between Bob Marley-style reggae, flamenco-accented guitar pop and intense hardcore/punk. Chao was at his best when he slowed the pace down with such message-oriented songs as "Desaparecido" and "Clandistino" ("Africano clandistino, marijuana illegal").

Los Amigos Invisibles took center stage on Friday night …READ MORE

  • HIGH VIBES - The Northeast’s Premier Jam-Band Fest, Gathering of the Vibes, Promises to Be a Grateful Dead-y Good Time.

    Tue Aug 8, 2006

    -
    By Steve Bloom

“The Vibes is the safest and cleanest festival of its size anywhere,” says Ken Hayes from home base in Norwalk, CT as he prepares for the 11th Annual Gathering of the Vibes (GOTV) from August 17-19

For the last five years, GOTV has taken place at Indian Lookout Country Club in Mariaville, NY (northwest of Albany). The property’s owned and operated by bikers, who police the site. This was needed after an overdose death marred the 2001 GOTV in Rhinebeck, NY.

“We had the most people ever in 2001 – 27,000 people,” Hayes recalls, who’s happier with the 10,000-12,000 attendees he expects this year. “After that happened and with the disrespect of so many to their bodies and to others, our board got together and decided we don’t want to do this again. We had people on respirators. It was scary. So we went to Indian Lookout, where Camp Creek had been done for many, many years …READ MORE

  • Steve Wishnia's Review of 'Burning Rainbow Farm'

    Thu Jul 20, 2006

    By Steve Bloom

My longtime High Times colleague, former senior editor Steve Wishnia, has reviewed a book - Dean Kuipers' Burning Rainbow Farm: How a Stoner Utopia Went Up in Smoke - that's very close to his heart. From 1996 to 2000, Steve attended many events at Michigan's Rainbow Farm, which had a close association with High Times. Sadly, state official targeted the 34-acre property owned by Tom Crosslin and Rollie Rohm, harassing festival attendees and in May 2001, raiding it for tax evasion and pot cultivation. Several months later, in a armed showdown with the authorites, Crosslin and Rohm were viciously gunned down.

"I connected to it immediately when I went to Hemp Aid in 1999," Wishnia writes in his review at inthesetimes.com. "Coming from the Lower East Side of Manhattan, I recognized a fellow low-rent counterculture community, a blessed find when my own was being crushed by a ruthless real-estate market and paramilitary …READ MORE

  • Rick Cusick, Auctioneer

    Wed Jun 28, 2006

    -
    By Steve Bloom

To most people, Rick Cusick is the associate publisher of High Times, and the magazine's longtime former ad director. (He was also co-editor with Dave Bienenstock and myself for 17 issues in 2005 and 2006.) But to Marijuana Policy Project and NORML supporters, Cusick may best be known as the hardest-working auctioneer in the drug-policy business.

At MPP's last two awards shows in New York (earlier this month) and Los Angeles (last year), he served as the events' mouth du jour. Midway during both programs, Cusick took to the stage, where he preceded to coax big bucks out of attendees, who'd already paid handsomely to be there in the first place.

"Rick did such a fantastic job at our Los Angeles awards gala in 2005 that we asked him to join us again in New York for MPP's 2006 awards gala on June 12," explains Stephanie …READ MORE

  • Bonnaroo Reconsidered

    Mon Jun 19, 2006

    By Steve Bloom

With Bonnie Raitt finishing up her set ("Bad Case of Lovin' You") on the Which stage, Phil Lesh & Friends are the last band to go at Bonnaroo 2006. They have the final set, starting at 8:30 pm. It's still unclear who Phil's "friends" are tonight (my guess is Trey Anastasio, Mike Gordon and the Benevento-Russo Duo - the same group he played with late last night at the "Super Jam").

Just an hour ago, I was sitting at a picnic table watching Sonic Youth bring the noise when none other than Lesh drove up in a golf cart (he had a driver) with several friends (perhaps his wife) and sat there for a few minutes. I imagined Phil riding around all day. checking out his favorite bands or hot new ones he's been wanting to see. That's a great way to see Bonnaroo - unfortunately, we all don't have chaffeur-driven golf carts at our disposal.

I stopped complaining today and made sure I saw everything I wanted to see - and more. Brothers …READ MORE

  • Re-entry to Planet Roo

    Fri Jun 16, 2006

    By Steve Bloom

I safely landed on Planet Roo yesterday night at 22:00 after an easy trip that started at New York's La Guardia Airport, continued to Nashville Airport and then a swift drive south to Manchester, where I snuck into the site with not as much as one iota of a traffic jam. And that was not due to short or long cuts. I simply blew down I-24 and pulled over when I saw the Holiday Inn Express across the road. That's where guest and media bracelets, and a guest parking pass (entitling entrance to the guest camping zone) were awaiting me. The parking attendants waved me through, right under a beautiful shade tree. Too lucky! I set up my new Eureka tent and took a walk into the main concert area.

As kismet will have it, I immediately ran into High Times grow guru Danny Danko. I reversed directions and followed him back into the campground, where he made a b-line for HT podhead Aaron Strebs' camp. We celebrated with a joint and beers, then headed …READ MORE
