Polls Show Prop 19 Losing Ground One Week From Election Day
Mon Oct 25, 2010
A new Public Policy Institute of California poll shows Proposition 19 - the measure to legalize pot possession among adults in the state - trails 49% to 44%, a trend seen in many recent polls on the issue. A Field Poll taken last month had the Proposition up 49-42%.
Neither side seems to have the money to run television ads, and experts say most people have their mind made up on the issue anyway. Prop 19 is by far the most visible question on the California ballot this year, and has attracted worldwide attention as it would be the first place in the United States to legalize cannabis.
Those who favor Prop 19 are engaged in firing up their side, as are the opponents of the measure. This Tuesday will mark one week from election day, and the issue is considered by most observers to be a toss-up. Voters in California go to the polls November 2nd.

Colorado Springs Gets Boost from Medical Pot Tax Dollars
Sun Oct 24, 2010
The city of Colorado Springs, Colorado is pulling in about $50,000 a month in tax revenue from medical cannabis according to The Gazette of Colorado Springs. The money has helped the city pay for things like grass mowing and they may soon be able to resume Saturday bus service.
The sales tax revenue will be enough to pay for a four-member panel to oversee medical marijuana regulations and zoning.

L.A. Sheriff Will Enforce Federal Pot Laws if Prop 19 Passes
Mon Oct 18, 2010
Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca held a press conference on Friday to announce that “Proposition 19 is not going to pass, even if it passes," meaning his deputies will continue to enforce federal cannabis laws even if California law changes.
Baca foresees far-reaching consequences should Prop 19 pass – ranging from an increase in traffic accidents to harboring drug cartels. However, his personal experience with pot is a bit limited. “Asked if he had ever experimented with the drug, Baca was unequivocal. ‘Hell no,’ he said.”
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder also announced Friday that Prop 19's passage in California would not change the Justice Department's enforcement of federal cannabis laws in the state.
Federal law under The Controlled Substances Act deems all growing, selling, purchasing and consuming of cannabis to be illegal. Prop 19 would …READ MORE

Voters to Decide on Medical Marijuana Dispensaries in Oregon
Mon Oct 18, 2010
On November 2nd voters in Oregon will go to the polls and have a chance to vote on Measure 74 - a bill that will allow state-licensed medical cannabis dispensaries to sell medicine to patients - of which Oregon has over 36,000.
Advocates of the measure say the current "grow your own" system is not keeping up with the demand of cardholders, and that not only will the measure bring a more steady supply of medicine, it will bring regulation to the state's medical cannabis industry.
Those against the measure say it is a stepping stone to full legalization at worst, and a chance to turn the medical pot industry in Oregon into a free-for-all at best.
Estimates on the amount of money the dispensaries could bring the state in fees and taxes ranges from $3 to $20 million annually.

Medical Pot Ads Helping Newspapers
Thu Oct 7, 2010
Newspapers in Colorado - their revenues hit hard by the Internet and classified ad sites like Craigslist - have found a new cash flow stream in the form of medical marijuana ads.
Faced with dwindling profits, papers like The Colorado Springs Independent have turned to medical pot ads - their weekly now comes with a 48-page supplement filled with medical marijuana advertisements, a full page ad costing $1,100.
The founder of The Independent says he couldn't have predicted this several years ago, but now medical marijuana ads make up about 10% of his paper's revenue.

Schwarzenegger Signs Pot Decrim Bill
Mon Oct 4, 2010
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed SB 1449 - the bill to reduce the penalties for possession of an ounce or less of pot from a misdemeanor criminal offense to a civil infraction. The civil infraction comes with a $100 fine, but there would be no arrest, court appearances, or criminal record for the accused.
More than 61,000 arrests were made last year in California for misdemeanor possession charges. With this measure the state hopes to realize millions of dollars in savings in court and law enforcement costs. The law takes effect on January 1, 2011.

Prop. 19 Gains Support in California
Tue Sep 28, 2010
In July a Field Poll found California's Proposition 19 trailing 48-44%. Now a new Field Poll shows Prop. 19 has gained support, leading among registered voters, 49-42%.
Despite opposition from the likes of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Senator Dianne Feinstein, Prop. 19 has been gaining in the polls all summer. Field Poll Director Mark DiCamillo says, "There's a real chance of passage here," unlike the situation two months ago.
In a 1969 Field Poll, marijuana legalization garnered only 13% favorability, rising to 30% in 1983 - and getting to a high of almost 50% this year. Prop. 19 would legalize pot for everyone over the age of 21 in California.

Marc Emery Gets Five Years in Prison
Mon Sep 13, 2010
The "Prince of Pot," Marc Emery, has been sentenced to five years in United States prison under the terms of his plea agreement.
Marc was given his sentence in a federal courthouse in Seattle, WA on Friday. Arrested by Vancouver police in 2005 at the behest of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Marc was accused by U.S. authorities of being one of the foremost drug dealers in the world because of his pot seed-selling business.
After years of fighting extradition from his home country of Canada, Marc relented last year so that his co-defendants would not be charged in the United States. Marc's supporters are now trying to get him moved to Canada so that he may serve his sentence closer to home.

Study Says Pot Can Relieve Pain
Thu Sep 9, 2010
A study recently published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal suggests that cannabis can be used to relieve people's nerve pain.
The study consisted of 21 adults, who inhaled through a pipe three times a day for five days. They were cycled through hits with three levels of THC as well as hits with no THC at all. Patients smoking the highest level of THC content - 9.4% - reported an overall reduction in pain - on a scale of 1 to 11 - from 6.1 to 5.4.
While researchers say this is a modest reduction, they also say it is "significant." The study was conducted by The McGill Health Centre in Montreal, Canada.

L.A. City Attorney Files Suit to Close All but 41 Medical Pot Dispensaries
Mon Aug 30, 2010
Los Angeles city officials announced last week that only 41 medical marijuana dispensaries, clinics, and collectives are eligible to stay open under the city's new ordinance. Now the City Attorney has filed suit against the remaining 135 dispensaries who thought they could stay open - asking for a temporary restraining order and injunction against them to make sure they close their doors.
Los Angeles City Attorney Carmen Trutanich wants a judge to enforce the city interpretation of the new ordinance. The 135 dispensaries who thought they would be able to stay open should have received letters last week explaining why the city has deemed them ineligible.
