Purple Urkel is a clone-only strain that seems to be the rage among medical clubs and cannabis connoisseurs. Danny Danko asked me to do some research on the popular strain and report on our current project using an Urkel clone mother. Purple Urkel is known for growing somewhat slowly, but its other traits make it very desirable. It turns an amazing purple late in bloom, possesses the most amazing grape/lavender flavor and gives a nice strong stone. But where did it come from?
Purple Urkel or Humboldt Purple (a.k.a. Purple Urple) has been growing in southern Humboldt County since approximately 1989. The Mendo cats are responsible for renaming it “Lavender,” among several other names. A good friend, White Trash Redneck, has grown the Mendocino Lavender cut side by side with the Humboldt Purple Urple/Urkel—as well as the Bridgeville Black Afghan, Nepalese Purple, Pakistani Purple Kush and Tooty Fruity Purple—and he …READ MOREtags: 148 « add a comment

Follow these instructions and learn how to make better bubble hash at home using wet, trimmed sugar leaves, water and ice.
Story and Photos by Subcool
When cannabis trichomes are separated and collected through a process involving ice, water and silk-screen filters, they form concentrated, soft and extremely potent hashish that bubbles and melts near flame if prepared properly. This is bubble hash.
If you want to create high-grade bubble hash at home, the following process is simple and effective, and for small custom batches it’s impossible to beat the quality and taste. This method works for both 1- and 5-gallon-bag sets.
After you’ve harvested and trimmed your buds, separate the sugar leaves to make bubble hash. Remove all fan leaves and yellowing leaves, as well as anything not coated in resin. It’s important to use only high-quality wet sugar leaves for this process. Using wet leaves rather than …READ MOREtags: 86 « add a comment

Choosing when to finally harvest your plants can be an agonizing decision. Many growers lack the patience to wait out the last few days of flowering to insure maximum THC content. Others timidly allow their plants to linger on and on, with diminishing returns. Smart farmers take copious notes on the behavior of their strains and use magnifying scopes to inspect the resin glands as they mature and establish the harvest window—the perfect time to cut down your crop.
Harvesting before this window opens will produce bud that is less potent, containing less essential oils and terpenes, causing your finished stash to take on a green or grassy taste, even if it’s dried and cured correctly.
When growing indica-dominant hybrids, unless you want to end up on the couch, harvest when the trichome heads are fully formed but before they start to cloud over and turn amber. According to the maturation time …READ MOREtags: 98 « add a comment
