Hempfest never gets old, the positive energy never fails to fire up my activist side. The hippy presence always rubs off on me and I leave with a full heart and a smile on my face. MzJill and I didn't get in until Friday afternoon (8/19) so we missed the opening at noon. Long before we got close to the event we could smell the sweet smell of the herb that everyone had gathered to celebrate. It was a really nice afternoon and the sun was shining but a cooling breeze was blowing off the bay and swirling the music around as we walked into the park.
The path into the park was a wall of people leaving the event – I am always amazed at how huge Hempfest crowds are. We walked around a bit saw comedian Ngaio Bealum and stopped by the TGA booth and enjoyed the sunset with few bowls of dank. The next day I got an early start because I am always really excited and a pretty hyper person. I love to meet and greet and …READ MORE

Story and photos by Subcool
The following note sets are from renowned cannabis breeder and medical grower Subcool and include background and descriptions on some of the world’s top strains, including Apollo 13 (BX), Vortex and Black Russian (which has disappeared). Vortex took home first place in the Sativa category at the HIGH TIMES Medical Cannabis Cup in San Francisco this past June.
The BeginningThe story of Apollo 13 begins with the Brothers Grimm, cannabis breeders who were only around a short time but had a huge impact on my cannabis collection and genetics stock. One of their pre-eminent strain creations was the fabled Apollo 13, and it is without a doubt one of my all-time favorites. Never mind the fact that she produced some of the best red-colored bubble hash ever made, or that her buds have amazing potency – her best quality may very well be the genetics locked …READ MORE

Alcohol-Free Cannabis Tincture

I’d like to show you how to make this amazing cannabis preparation. It’s a vegetable-glycerin-based tincture that you can make with just a few inexpensive kitchen items. I’m specifying vegetable glycerin so that you don’t confuse it with the product used to make soap, which comes from animal fats and is definitely not the same thing. Vegetable glycerin is used in cough syrups and many other products and is safe for human consumption. However, I do recommend drinking extra water when you’re taking it, as it tends to dehydrate you when taken in larger amounts.
Glycerin – also known as glycerol – is easy to find. The company Now makes a very high-quality version that you should be able to get at your local health-food store. Then you simply soak some high-quality cannabis shake and kif in the …READ MORE

Subcool’s Super Soil Step-by-Step
Fri Aug 7, 2009
Story by Subcool, photos by Subcool & MzJill
There’s nothing that compares to the flavor of properly grown organic pot: The subtle tastes and aromas created by using only “Mother Earth” are overwhelming to the senses when it’s done properly. As with vegetables, a rich organic soil can bring out the best in cannabis.
Over the past 20 years, I have tried almost every possible way to cultivate our favorite plant. And while hydro is certainly faster and the yields blow soil away, I’ve developed an organic-soil mix that consistently performs extremely well, with very little guesswork involved (i.e., I don’t have to worry about pH or ppms ever).
I spent a few years developing the recipe for this Super Soil mix, and using it in 7-gallon nursery pots, I can run from start to finish adding only plain water. …READ MORE

Purple Urkel is a clone-only strain that seems to be the rage among medical clubs and cannabis connoisseurs. Danny Danko asked me to do some research on the popular strain and report on our current project using an Urkel clone mother. Purple Urkel is known for growing somewhat slowly, but its other traits make it very desirable. It turns an amazing purple late in bloom, possesses the most amazing grape/lavender flavor and gives a nice strong stone. But where did it come from?
Purple Urkel or Humboldt Purple (a.k.a. Purple Urple) has been growing in southern Humboldt County since approximately 1989. The Mendo cats are responsible for renaming it “Lavender,” among several other names. A good friend, White Trash Redneck, has grown the Mendocino Lavender cut side by side with the Humboldt Purple Urple/Urkel—as well as the Bridgeville Black Afghan, Nepalese Purple, Pakistani Purple Kush and Tooty Fruity Purple—and he …READ MOREtags: 190 « add a comment

Follow these instructions and learn how to make better bubble hash at home using wet, trimmed sugar leaves, water and ice.
Story and Photos by Subcool
When cannabis trichomes are separated and collected through a process involving ice, water and silk-screen filters, they form concentrated, soft and extremely potent hashish that bubbles and melts near flame if prepared properly. This is bubble hash.
If you want to create high-grade bubble hash at home, the following process is simple and effective, and for small custom batches it’s impossible to beat the quality and taste. This method works for both 1- and 5-gallon-bag sets.
After you’ve harvested and trimmed your buds, separate the sugar leaves to make bubble hash. Remove all fan leaves and yellowing leaves, as well as anything not coated in resin. It’s important to use only high-quality wet sugar leaves for this process. Using wet leaves rather than …READ MOREtags: 162 « add a comment

Choosing when to finally harvest your plants can be an agonizing decision. Many growers lack the patience to wait out the last few days of flowering to insure maximum THC content. Others timidly allow their plants to linger on and on, with diminishing returns. Smart farmers take copious notes on the behavior of their strains and use magnifying scopes to inspect the resin glands as they mature and establish the harvest window—the perfect time to cut down your crop.
Harvesting before this window opens will produce bud that is less potent, containing less essential oils and terpenes, causing your finished stash to take on a green or grassy taste, even if it’s dried and cured correctly.
When growing indica-dominant hybrids, unless you want to end up on the couch, harvest when the trichome heads are fully formed but before they start to cloud over and turn amber. According to the maturation time …READ MOREtags: 113 « add a comment
