I still cannot get my head around why Oaksterdam got raided. It makes no sense to me. Oaksterdam University was founded and run by Richard Lee, a medical marijuana patient, who happens to be in a wheelchair. He turned a rundown forgotten downtown area into a small utopian business center that generated huge amounts of money for the city of Oakland. He is also the man that put together Prop. 19, that almost had cannabis completely legal for Californians in 2010 (53.5% No vs 46.5 % Yes). What was the task force meeting like before the Feds went to raid Mr. Lee, “Ok regulators, mount up! There is this guy in a wheelchair, who’s legal business is paying over a million dollars to the state in taxes during one of the worst financial collapses of our lifetimes. Lets go scare the shit out of him.”
Were these agents drunk? That is like if you were really hungry and you wanted a hamburger, so you …READ MORE

By Haley Roll
Ever since 2002 the University of Central Florida in Orlando has boasted the largest chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) in the nation. My name is Haley Roll and I am a junior at UCF majoring in Communications. Ever since I learned about NORML – in high school – I’ve wanted to be a part of it. At the beginning of the fall semester, even though it was only my third meeting, I gave a speech asking for votes to be Director of Public Relations. I don’t think I would have been able to pull it off if I wasn’t so passionate about NORML and what it stands for. I am now happy to announce that I’ve been elected DPR and I can’t explain how privileged I feel.
Last year NORML UCF had 70 paying members and this year we have exceeded that number and we’re still growing. This past semester has …READ MORE

Marijuana Might Help You Stay Slim, But Sugary, Butter-Laden "Medibles" Will Not!
Sun Sep 11, 2011
Proponents of sensible cannabis use are thrilled with the results of a new study that has grabbed headlines: “Marijuana smokers less likely to be obese.” French scientist Dr. Yann Le Strat was surprised by his findings, but I wasn’t at all. There's so much yet to be discovered about our endogenous cannabinoid system, which regulates many of the functions in our bodies, including metabolism. When the cannabinoid receptors are blocked, as in the case of weight-loss pharmaceutical Rimbonant, the pounds do melt away, but with undesirable side effects including suicidal thoughts and development of other diseases. Cannabis is the only reliable agent for appetite stimulation, which is potentially lifesaving for patients suffering from AIDS wasting, nausea or anorexia. It's clear that cannabis interacts with our appetite in many ways we don't understand, and I hope Dr. Yann Le …READ MORE

NORML Interviews Debby Goldsberry
Wed Mar 9, 2011
March is Women’s History Month and one of my personal heroes, Debby Goldsberry, is a pioneer of cannabis reform in our country. She was the recipient of the NORML Pauline Sabin award in 2005 and helped co-found Berkeley Patients Group as well as some of the top reform organizations nationally. Enjoy and celebrate this exclusive feature brought to you by my HIGH TIMES Activism Blog.
Story and photo by Diane FornbacherYou helped found the successful Berkeley Patients Group in 2000, what other projects have you got cooking?
Right now, I am largely focused on helping to implement the medical cannabis ordinances passed in Oakland and Berkeley in the fall of 2011. Each city is planning to issue more dispensary permits, and they are trying to issue manufacturing permits for medical cannabis cultivation. The federal government is pushing back hard, even threatening …READ MORE

Why Prop. 19 is the best thing to happen to mmj patients since Prop. 215
Mon Oct 4, 2010
Below is an open leter I received from a Prop 19 supporter. It's long but certainly worth the read:
For my support of Prop. 19, I have been subject to the scorn, approbation and the most demoralizing denunciations imaginable by a group of medical marijuana patients exhibiting what can only be termed “medical reefer madness.”
With the best of intentions based on a poorly researched legal analysis, these anti-19 folks have joined forces with the people whose indifference and outright hostility have resulted in, and continue to result in, the arrest, prosecution and imprisonment of thousands of medical marijuana patients.
Their never-ending harangues that Prop. 215 will go into the trash can of history if Prop. 19 is passed is causing medical marijuana patients extreme anxiety and leading them to question their support of this historic and critical piece of reform legislation. Graphically describing the horrors that will …READ MOREtags: 4 « add a comment

Prohibition Is a Deadly Disease
Mon Aug 9, 2010
By Vivian McPeak
We've heard it all at one time or another. Pot is the "gateway" drug. "It will rot your brain, get you hooked, and even kill you." The truth, however, is that prohibition is more likely to do these things to you than the herb.
In fact, all the marijuana in the world could not do as much harm as cannabis prohibition has done. America's insidious pot laws have left a long trail of shattered lives and broken dreams. How many children have grown up without a parent? How many good, decent parents have been locked away with rapists, murderers and thieves? How many Americans have had everything stolen from them – their cars, their homes, their money, even their freedom?
We've been denied housing and employment. We've even been denied an education. What other segment of our society has been denied student loans, welfare, and …READ MORE

Mon Sep 28, 2009
Hi Freaks,
Sly smiles and alien dials, here’s to future memories, mother-ships and coffee sips. Yes., True., I am burning thru numerous one hitters, looking out the window, banging the ash out, re-packing and packing for a flight to Nash-Vegas TN. I am preparing for the fourth stop of “The Marijuana-logues” sweet tea tour down south. I have been sitting in "The Marijualogue" chair, with the current 09 line up of the epic pot play.It is Myself, original M-Loguer (OG Kush) Tony Camin and San Francisco native comic Dan Gabriel. Doug Benson and Arj Barker are touring in other parts of the world and have passed over the honors over for the time being. There have been many Marijuana-loguers in the past, Tommy Chong actually toured with the play, plus several comedians have stepped in the chairs like Jimmy Dore, Seth Morris and Brett Gelman. …READ MOREtags: 2 « add a comment

Green Army NY Remembers Barbara Jackson
Fri Aug 7, 2009
Very rarely does a case come along that so embodies the very ideals you are trying to prevent or uphold. For us, it is Barbara Jackson. Her story highlights everything that is wrong with our country’s policy toward marijuana. Green Army NY would like to take this month to remind ourselves of what Ms. Jackson was fighting for, how she fought for it and what it all means to us. People like her show what can truly be done with a bit of conviction. Barbara, we thank you.
For those who do not know, here is a bit of background on Ms. Jackson and her story:
Barbara was born April 27, 1937 in South Hill Virginia. She came north, arriving in New York at an early age. She loved New York and in her chest beat the heart of a New Yorker. She left behind a large family, having had 10 children, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren – along with a host of other relatives and friends who all …READ MORE
