HIGH TIMES INTERVIEW: Rick Steves

Thu, Feb 05, 2009 11:57 am

For the past 30 years, celebrated travel author and television host Rick Steves has shown Americans how to travel smart through his numerous guidebooks, website and PBS series Rick Steves Europe. But beyond that, Steves has become one of the nations most outspoken celebrity advocates for marijuana legalization. HIGH TIMES editor Bobby Black caught up with this adventurer-turned-activist in his home state of Washington, after his speech at the 2008 Seattle Hempfest to get his view on the state of the drug war in America.

the man is a world traveler.he has seen what works and what does not.the euro model as he knows is the way it should be done here.
nothing ever comes easy to the american people,we have had to fight for our rights every step of the way.rights for women, for blacks ,for gays etc. etc.
we all must come together and fight for our rights with this too.the government always thinks they know whats good for us.WELL THE FACT IS WE THE PEOPLE KNOW WHATS GOOD FOR US AND I THINK WE NOW HAVE A REAL FRIEND IN THE WHITEHOUSE.
LETS ALL EMAIL HIM AND LET HIM KNOW WE BACK HIM IN MAKEING THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE REALITY.

i would like to thank the rick steves, michael phelps, tommy chong etc..for standing up against the failed marijuana policy in the u.s.now is the time for legalization and new real dialouge on this thus far failed policy on pot. when will the adults in this society start acting like adults and take back our moral rights from our own government?this new industry is ready to begin putting people to work and be taxed in order to pay back this huge debt our country has thrust upon us all! wake up america, it' time to think outside the box!!!

Good Video, but I think Rick Steves does a a bit of a generalization when he talks about the drug policy "In Europe".

There's over fifty countries in Europe, and the drug polices wary a lot for example, the restrictive Scandinavian countries to more relaxed of the Netherlands.

He would be a great candidate to help Americans reformulate their ideas about Cannabis.
As funny as stoner stereotypes are (I still love "Half Baked" and the Cheech and Chong films, Seth Rogan's stuff, etc.) we need more smokers like Steves, Harrison Ford, Martha Stewart et al, to get the word out that not all of us are mindless glassy-eyed giggly freaks.
These are the people who will blaze a trail to legalization.
Thanks Rick, for standing up and speaking out!

Rick Steves is awesome. Best job ever: tour the world, drink the wine, eat the food, see the sights, and write about it. One of his books provided tons of fun and saved me some money by telling me what to avoid and where to go for the "local flavor" (during my 6 months in Germany/Austria). He's forming his legalization opinions based on what he sees in Europe. When will he write about his pot exploits overseas???
