At least, in Laguna up till 66/67 most of the surfers were guys who were at ease in the water on big days, guys who grew up there and spent a lot of time on the beach. They were also doing lifeguarding and spearfishing, surfing was part of the mix.
Going on a surfing trip was like going camping for us. A van was a step up from a tent.
Grass and acid hit the scene. The rest is history.
Ah, those were good old days.
