I'm in agreement with Cammie. Us Americans as well as the Brit's are idiots when turned loose in your streets. Myself I'm a bit more reserved and don't want the limelight on me when partaking in the herb of such a relaxed country. There is so much more to Amsterdam than just the buzz. But most are limited by time restraints so they try to take in to much at once and there in lies the problems of making the event look like and show off the ignorance of those partaking. I'm coming back at three different times this year to check out what I kept myself in the fog while there the first two times. I'm an artist and would love to have Amsterdam as a host for me and my band of merry gentlemen and ladies introduce our extreme art form throughout this wonderful city. I've shared my work with the Cannabis Cup for the winners of it. Now that I have two sculptures residing at Barney's and The Greenhouse I have opened the door for other endeavors throughout this city. I hope that the Cup takes into consideration what this event does to the city and it's image. I for one don't want to loose this pardise because of the tarnished blemish that a few might leave on the city. Repect what we have so we can have it in the future. Thank you Cammie and I hope we can meet in the future on my travels throughout Europe and using Amsterdam as my home base while there. Here's to those that love what they have and want to keep it.

this was my first cup but second time to the dam. it was a disappointment. the event was not well ran, it was hard to believe it is the 21st version of the event. starting with the judges pass i purchased online through the ht website, i found myself more informed by non ht conduits. i only received a purchase confirmation email, which explained i would need my confirmation to attend the cannabis cup held nov 23rd thru 27th. i never received an email or communication telling me where the cup would be held, when the entertainment events would be held, who would be performing, the coffeeshops participating in the event, etc.

thanks to the cool weather (i arrived in town a few days before the event) i found myself spending some extra hours indoors and when i hadn't received an email the saturday before the cup's start googling info for past cup events to findout where i had needed to go...(i ended up narrowing it down to either taking place at melkweg or powerzone...and subsequent visits to the two venues websites confirmed the time for registration at the powerzone)

the powerzone is located in a back lot of a local shopping area (think the home depot off of the back lot of your local mall -- large but hard to find unless you already know its there), and the event organizers hadn't marked the way from the local transportation hub and the powerzone (by the way several other ccup attendees got of a train and had the same look of now where do i go). so i stood online for a few hours in the damp snowy sunday afternoon waiting to register...while the event folks can't control the weather they can anticipate needs (it would have been nice to have some music through speakers to pass the time online -- maybe music from the ht band -- or some event coordinators working the line to let us know what to expect from the registration process and the subsequent days of the events, etc). once inside there was no real line or orderly process to picking up your ccup kit (tshirt, bag, shopcrawl booklet, etc).

again, as others have mentioned during the event everything started late...really late. i suspect IF i do the cup again i will just go to the dam register for a daypass and hit the participating shops and collect the free samples that are offered and call it a day.

after seeing the size of the samples greenhouse gave out i am not surprised it 'won'...and yes this is coming from one of the many americans who trek to the cup every year.

I was in Amsterdam by coincidence during the Cup. Didn't go to the festivities but hit the shops. Glad I saved my $250 for green instead of scene. Without exception, the staff at the coffee shops in A'dam were completely hostile toward the English-speaking patrons. What snobs. I left after one day and spent the rest of my trip in Utrecht, Rotterdam, and Eindhoven where they have good herb AND understand the value of the Euro. By the way, the street reef in L.A., Seattle, and Boulder is on par with most of what I smoked there, without all the snobbery and 'tude. That GH strain of lemon haze is one fine sativa though.

OP LECHTER!!!

arjan is the biggest liar in holland!!

last year, he pushed some soma´s "amnesia haze" to the judges as "super silver haze 2007"!

for that alone, greenhouse should be banned from the cannabis cup forever!!!

of course that is not going to happen, as long as arjan keeps on BUYING his freaking cups!

people from High Times, i´m really sorry, but CC sucks!!!

Well I can say that spending $200 + on a judges pass is a waste of money. Best thing to do is go to Amsterdam in the summer and visit all the different coffeeshops on your own pace. You get no real FREE SAMPLES from HT with your VIP Juges Pass... all you get is entry into all the venues. All the FREE SAMPLES were given out by the participants who also had to pay a small fortune to not only have a table and chairs at the Powerzone but also to have their bud entered. There are way better events being held through out Europe as well as in Canada. It's time that HT put together a proper event where all attendees get VALUE for the hard earned $ $ $ that they spend to attend the cup.

30 euros was way to much money for a one days visit.
I didn't get anything not even a free t-Shirt nothing. Only to get in.
15 min and you've seen it all ! !
The man who told me it was 30 euros said: It would be worth it.
Bah....waste of money. It's not for one day visitors it's not for judges...it's for the hightimes money bag.
Yes I did get a sip from some vulcano bag or two. Thats it. The music was amateuristic.
Only when you are an insider...maybe then yo will have a party. There were only one or two good people: Soma, Evert from the "Verdamper" and lets not forget Marco Renda (Treaing Yourself magazine)
It was my last time. You can spend your wellearned money much better in the city itself.
The only thing I hope for is HighLife Cannbis Cups return.

Was judge at the cup again. Over all the smoke was better this year than in years past.the winner was not the best. i had better lemon at grey area. makes sense when you learn that green houses "super lemon haze" Came from a clonethat was given by DNA.

cannibus cutie

Dec 8 2008, 8:16 pm

I was there, and it was a waste of 250 bucks, save the money and spend it on cannibus in the shops and go in the summer. I was surprised at the stupid hippie bullshit. Nothing started on time, we arrived Saturday went to register and they were just starting to set up (registration was supposed to start Friday). All we got we're a bunch of t-shirts that we can't ever wear here in the states for fear of being profiled. No free samples from any of the shops and the weather sucked. I've been to Amsterdam 5x before all in the summer, and had more fun when we could walk around and enjoy the city. As far as the concerts go, we saw Andrew Tosh sing a song that was it. There is nothing to do, no good munchies, or anywhere to sit and relax at the Powerzone (not to mention it was a hike to get there) If you use the bus, you'll spend 2 hours trying to get back into the city a 10 minute metro ride. Go in the summer enjoy the city when the weather is nice.

TDC:
I'm glad you finally admitted you work for HT.
Your previous posts were so self-serving, I was almost insulted that you thought we were too dumb to figure it out.
I also do not believe you were at the Cups.
There is nothing personal in them to suggest it.
You could have gotten your info from David or Matt or anyone else.
I think your general posing and self-serving promotional remarks further injures the reputation of HT.
I wish HT the best, but I must say you are a phony.

In electronic instrumentation and signal processing, a time to digital converter (abbreviated TDC) is a device for converting a signal of sporadic pulses into a digital representation of their time indices. In other words, a TDC outputs the time of arrival for each incoming pulse. Because the magnitudes of the pulses are not usually measured, a TDC is used when the important information is to be found in the timing of events. In practice, a TDC usually follows a discriminator. TDCs are most often used in applications where measurement events happen infrequently, such as high energy physics experiments, where the sheer number of data channels in most detectors ensures that each channel will be excited only infrequently by particles such as electrons, photons, and ions.

In its simplest implementation, a TDC is simply a high-frequency counter with a buffered output.

For $300 bucks i get about 8 grams of blow.

Knowing the brilliance of the High Times website developers, I'd like to take bets on how long this video will remain as a link on this website.

You can almost tell when the weather in New York is good or whether killer weed has come into the office. There is practically no new activity on the website for days.

I HAVE NEVER BEEN TO A CUP BUT I MUST SAY I WILL GO TO SEE FOR MYSELF ONE YEAR; I JUST LOVE THE VIBE OF THE DAM IN GENERAL. I PLAN TO GO SOON, WILL I HAVE LUCK IN FINDING SOME OF THESE GREAT STRAINS OR IS IT JUST FOR HTE CUP?

TDC

Dec 2 2008, 2:28 pm

The weed was way better this year than any other year. The coffeeshops really upped their game. It used to be most shops entered an uncured version of Power Plant or Haze, this year several shops entered outstanding weed that was very well cured. I don't vote and I don't try all the strains, but I was impressed with Green House, Barneys, Homegrown Fantasy, Green Place, and a bunch of other shops. The pass only costs 250 euros if you buy at the door. It costs $175 if you buy in advance. That is a bargain for five days and nights of entertainment.

Sonny

Dec 2 2008, 1:17 pm

By the way the Cannabis Cup does suck. It's not worth spending 250 euros at all. Big time waste of money. The only time I will attend the Cannabis Cup if there are good proformers. Thats what your really paying for. Out of all the coffee shops. There was probably 2 shops giving samples out. Cannabis Cup is not worth it. Just go to Amsterdam and enjoy your self. Go in the summer. Enjoy the weather. Cannabis Cup not worth it. Trust me, I just came from there.

Sonny

Dec 2 2008, 1:12 pm

I just came back from Amsterdam, and I did go to the Cannabis Cup. I thought Blue Cheese was the best green out there. As far as coffee shops "The Mellow Yellow". Very very fresh weed there. Nice place.

Dec 1 2008, 10:17 am

Dec 1 2008, 10:04 am

I missed it this year due to ill health, but from what I can make out I didn't miss much.

Looks like the usual cash for Cups event with half arsed organisation and piss poor provisions for paying punters.

I bet the requirements all over town to smoke mixed joints outside went down well and I can believe a lot of folken will be suffering from severe cases of High Times Flu as a result this week as they get back home.

Seems a lot of folks didn't come dressed for winter but skate surfing dude. More fool them. I hear the snow was pretty.

Richard

Dec 1 2008, 9:44 am

TDC: Were you there ?

TDC

Dec 1 2008, 8:56 am

Well, it was obviously the greatest Cup ever, which is why the haters have to come here to pound the site with negativity. You can't say the Cup was bought with free samples and then say no one got free samples. What does the Cup pass (which costs $185 in advance) get you? It gets you admission to five days of concerts, ceremonies, seminars. It gets you bus shuttle service for five days. It gets you a t-shirt and program guide. And it gets you the right to vote. That works out to less than 40 bucks per day for events that run from noon until 1 AM. The Cup pass is a good deal, and if you don't want it, then just pay the 30 euro day fee for the Cup expo and visit the coffeeshops on your own. The best thing about this year's event was the presence of Andrew Tosh, Kymani Marley, Bushman, CenC Love, and Leon, as well as the return of the Cannabis Cup Band. The performances were all outstanding, and the highlights were posted the next day on the internet for everyone in the world to see.

Dec 1 2008, 8:25 am

It sounds like the cup hasn't changed much, which also means it's still a good time. I was a judge at the 10th in 1997 and it sounds very similar, although the winner that year I did agree with (Peacemaker from de Dampkring). But even then it is about politics and who throws the best parties. The guys who have been growing and breeding for decades but don't have a fancy coffee shop are always screwed since they can't get their product in the hands of every judge for free. KC Brains is a perfect example IMO. He knows breeding and I have grown his strains and they were wonderful and stood up well against Sensi and the big boys. In fact the least impressive seeds I ever bought were from Green House (low germ rates, inconsistent/unstable) but their coffee shop sure was fun. All in all I think it's a good time but I too was naive to think it was really going to be about the best bud out there. I will go back to the cip at some point that's for sure.

Nov 30 2008, 7:59 pm

The one GREAT thing about the cup is that there are often legitimate activists there. These days, there aren't that many huge events except out west for the most part. But there are also NARKS at the cup who are just praying to have growers talk about their grow room "back-home" etc., etc., Just wait till they get home! DON'T TALK ABOUT GROW ROOMS AT THE CUP EXCEPT TO REALLY TRUSTED FRIENDS - KEEP IT REALLY QUIET - YOU COULD BE SURROUNDED BY NARKS.

seed-man

Nov 30 2008, 7:52 pm

If Amsterdam were wiped out, there would be no names of things, no reference points, etc. For civilization to exist, the names of types of seeds, and the names of some seed breeders ought to be known for history's sake, assuming they aren't being pursued seriously by INTERPOL, that is.

The names and fame of some coffee shop operators ought to be known too. They aren't nobodies with no lives.

We have to totally decrim. the seed business or more and more of them are going to wind up as prisoners, like Luke of Paradise seeds who wound up in prison in Switzerland, and Marc Emery, who is on the verge of prison in the U.S. for the REST OF HIS LIFE.

That isn't worth illegality in my opinion. The guys just mentioned are not criminals - the law SUCKS and deserves to be squashed out of the court system. It is ILLEGITMATE misuse of government power to have any affect upon the lives of marijuana smokers, seed breeders, or even pot dealers, This is misuse of government power to the MAX.

Join NORML, MPP, or some organization that will fight the drug war legal-prison-police-mafia. (We need good lawyers to help us, but their system is part of the problem.)

Gulpener-Dordt-man

Nov 30 2008, 7:44 pm

I wish they had something psychedelic in Amsterdam that actually works for ME. I need some strong LSD I guess - the shrooms I have wasted money on for over 12 or so years still don't do a darn thing but thin out my wallet a LOT! I GIVE UP!!!!! Pass the Dordt beer. I can't eat the quantity of shrooms that would have an effect on me - they simply don't work. NOw they're illegal anyway, but I don't care. That's like making chewing gum illegal if you ask me.

what?

Nov 30 2008, 7:36 pm

Hey Cammie - I've never heard of any "hard-drug" problems at the Cannabis Cup. What are you talking about? I've never heard of any alcohol problems at the CC either. And Cammie, there are MANY other cups besides the High Times Cannabis Cup, and I don't see you complaining about all the Euro-cups. You're just jealous of the first, largest, and best cup. Could be that this year's cup was a dud - I doubt it though. Every year there are people who complain about the cup with no real detail of their complaint. AT least tell us why it sucked, OK. Otherwise you're taking up space for nothing. This beiung your first cup, you can't compare it to anything else. Actually, I don't like the Cottonmouth Kings that much, but at least I didn't go that year.

Nov 30 2008, 3:08 pm

I have to agree with everyone who was unimpressed w the cup. It was my 2nd time to Amsterdam and my 1st to the cup and I was SUPER disappointed!! There was NOTHING at the Power Zone that you couldn't find around the city for FREE!!!! We were all promised free samples and that was a crock in itself. What did the passes and the money we spent even pay for anyway?!! And why did it look like someone just found an abandoned warehouse and setup shop 1 day beforehand?? The whole thing looked like shit, was unorganized and was a jip!!!! I feel taken and so should everyone else who spent money there. I will NEVER attend the cup again! Anyone who is looking to go and feels they missed out, should think again!!!! I give the cup 2 thumbs down, WAY down!!!!!

Nov 30 2008, 1:27 pm

I agree got to Dam on the Wenesday and followed the judges around, would have to say I didn’t miss out on much except the $250 price tag and the fact i coudnt grade. Surprised with utopia haze didn’t think much of it, even more surprised there hasn’t been any word about S 5 haze, Starwarz , Happy haze or Super Dolphin. Discussed with the price of the bubble hash, you would expect something white for that price. 55 euro a gram to too much.

Cammie LaBass

Nov 30 2008, 11:15 am

As a resident of Amsterdam I would like to say that your Cannabis Cup is nothing more than a nuisance to our beautiful city. Now that the coffeeshops are coming under extreme scrutiny from the Dutch government and laws are changing regarding proximity to schools etc I and a lot of other people feel that we need to try and keep things low key. As you know we are lucky here in The Netherlands to have the relaxed laws we have but pressure is mounting in the international community to stop this and make us like every other country. For most of the year the locals slide along quite happily sharing shops with the tourists until Cannabis Cup time. Then we are invaded by people who don't seem to find this enough but have to start scoring class A drugs and getting wasted and cause hassle to hotel and hostel staff especially. This hard drug thing might seem nothing but somehow it always seem to reflect badly on the collective coffeshop community and just draws bad publicity. I don't want to have to go back to scoring on the street when they close down all the coffeeshops so please hold your cup somewhere else.

Nov 30 2008, 10:15 am

I agree with the reviews which found the cup to be hyped too much. Last year I went last minute and decided not to waste my money on a pass. To pay $250 and still have to buy weed makes no sense to me. I can find out all the information that the expo supplies online for free while using the thousands of dollars it takes to get to the Dam to enjoy my time visiting one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I do not think there is one strain at any of the Coffeeshops i have been to that are better than the strains we grow on the east coast. The process has totally been commercialized and the quality reflects the decline in care. I completely encourage people to visit The Nederlands, but please go during a time of year with warmer weather and less people. If you follow my advice either going at a better time of year or forgoing the practically worthless judges pass (the pass pretty much says 'Hi, I am a stupid tourist') you can have a truly wonderful time. Peace and be easy.

Nov 30 2008, 9:52 am

Was at the cup this year I must say for my first time it didn't seem like that much of a big deal, don't get me wrong the cup and it's history is awesome I just think with all the vendors and the pricey weed samples somewhere along the line the real reason for this competition has been lost.
with vendors and shops doing all they can to buy themselves some of the glory, if your product is good you shouldn't need to pump it by marketing tricks...all and all I must say Amsterdam was a wicked experience and all the shops both in the cup and not had some deserving samples that need to be experienced by everyone..I recommend the City Hall coffeeshop located in the red light district right beside this years winning shop the Greenhouse! this shop had a menu full of excellent smoke everytime I walked out of this place I was Blazed super nice guys too...anyways my vote for the weed went to the Rookies Coffeeshop for their Roshia super silver haze was very tasty and the stone lasted a good while also it's a smaller shop with less popularity than the other bigger shops which has an appeal to me Go UNDERDOGS..Thanks High Times for the awesome experience.

I agree with "Unimpressed" I just finished smoking some S.L.H. and I too think it gets you high quick but it is gone in no time. I also agree that people voted for them because they got so much free stuff.

I was impressed with the Bushdoctors Lem-nesia and Happy Feelings Happy Haze I also enjoyed. I felt Barneys Utopia was lacking what G-13 has so I stick with the 13.

I enjoyed my time but I will not return for the cup in the future, it is better when the shops are not crowded. But it was fun to do.

unimpressed

Nov 30 2008, 4:14 am

The super lemon haze was very quick to get you high, then wore off very quick. Not a good buy in my opinion. Yes, Arjan bought the cup (in more ways than one!) by giving out free weed, drinks vouchers etc but just did not have the best weed. The best weed of the cup came from katsu with black widow and Boerejongens with S5-Juice. Both far better quality than Greenhouse or Barneys lacklustre entries. There is more to the cup than who gives the cheapest or free weed out. I will never go to the cup again but these 2 coffeeshops will get my money every time.

I'm hoping the tone of the post below is not an indicator surrounding the Dutch grow community. There is definately a negative slant, one that will only separate and will be hard to subsequently mend.

Nov 30 2008, 1:59 am

I gotta say, the winning strain WAS a very good smoke, but don't think for a minute that the schwag bags, judges only entry to the coffeehouse, free samples of the bud, super cheap samples of the bud and hash, drink tickets, free breakfasts, and all the baby kissing that Arjan did (my friends and I spoke to him personally on Sunday) didn't help his cause.

I think that Greenhouse United WAS the best house, but Utopian Haze, or Chocolope WAS the best strain. Furthermore, even though Greenhouse WAS the best Coffeehouse, Arjan, I didn't have the heart to tell you this on Sunday, but the food was pretty lackluster. Good thing your patrons aren't there for it!

Lastly, he mentioned the staff at GU, and for the most part I agree, accept the waitress serving us on Sunday had a bad attitude and got all bent out of shape when we tried to use our drink tickets. Three judges and she didn't want to accept 2 drink tickets from our group...puuuuhleez.

Anyway...I guess I'm not surprised the vote went this way and Arjan has won 2 of the last 3 cups...he seems to know how to run a campaign.
