Advanced Grow Feature – Spinning Lights!

Thu, Jul 30, 2009 1:12 pm

HIGH TIMES Cultivation Reporter Nico Escondido takes you inside a medicinal pot garden in California to explore the latest in grow technology for Part III of his Advanced Lighting Series. Nico breaks down the advantages these spinning lamps have over ordinary stationary lighting systems, including complete penetration of garden canopies and the self-cooling aspect their movement provides. Plus, they totally spin, man!

Read the full feature in the September 2009 issue of HIGH TIMES. And, don’t forget to catch up on the first two parts of this series: Let There Be Light and Light and the LED Zeppelin.

what good is video if there is no link to get one, I been searching on google.com and found nothing. not being able to buy one is the same if not worse then it not existing? I like to think I have a lot of reverse engineering skills, so I will make something like this. Also have a look at the omega. that you can buy :) as it is market real

This is just real dangerous I mean these light get very hot it just sounds like a fire waiting to happen if not used right.

I grow 2 plants (fems only- good genetics) using 3 LED 45 watt panels- one on top and 2 on either side. This allows light to get below the canopy. The growth and yield are robust. Buds are large and crystal coated. The days of hot, watt consuming, fire hazard days are over for me. LONG LIVE LED'S !!

I have 4 400watt multi tap(110, 220, 440)hps lights with built in ballast!!! Have bulbs with them and also have pics! These lights are big and powerful! Two are weather proof. E-mail me at yahoo. May be willing to trade if money is involved. Asking 100.00 but neg. Willing to ship if you have Pay Pale account. Maybe would drive if within 2-3 hours of me.

Life Lite (Light) Technologies, ie. Sun Pulse Bulbs, are definately the best on the market. I have used several different brands and none have performed as well as the Sun Pulse. Ive had increased yields, denser crops, and lower penetration of light throughout the garden.

These guys know exactly what they are talking about. They are very helpful with personal questions.

They handed out free bulbs at an Expo. Keep up the great work.

Your products will set a new standard in the industry!

why couldn't you just put one 400 on each wall and ceiling and some fluros up from the ground? Seems pretty easy to do i used to be in construction until economy tanked allways grew on the side. i think that with all these people out of work out there should all start growing under fluros at first if they don't have cash reserves breed your own build your own systems change the world weather the facist corprate goverment wants to or not these crazy prices on medicine need to stop no cannabis should be over 10 dollars a gram if we all sow the seed and overgrow then maybe we can save this broken planet.

seeing the leds were a complete fail besides it being great for propagating clones and headaches and a petty terrible suplimental and even veg light thses spinning lamps are really good ive seen them in action and its all around a huge imporvement anyone who cant see beyond the pricetag wouldnt have never had any bud in the 80s because stuff that is basic now was really expensive 20 years ago......... t

$2400?? no thank you. I could make one myself for aout $100 + $800 (2 600w HID lights) +/- dependig on how good a deal you can pick up the lights for.

The spinning lights are a great idea, very revolutionary, personally though for $2400, they're are premade grow boxes(i.e. b.c.northern light,hydroponics-wholesale) that are temp controlled with more than enough light, so unless getting the full spectrum will increase a yield by double its really just a matter of personal taste. However personally I've never seen one of these in real life, I have seen all the web and hightimes has to offer but no one that i found has actually done a grams per square meter comparison to a well vented standard high intensity hanging light so really unless some guy comes out saying that his full spectrum spinner produced 700gr/sqm or his potency went up dramaticly, 1 light should not be priced the same as full setup.

Hello again! My, what crazy comments that you all have. I have seen a pretty cool system that implemented a bicycle tire and an old fan motor. Obviously you would need some carpentry skills, and possibly some electrical contracting skills, but from what I saw it really works. The hood was connected to the bicycle tire which was then connected to the motor, and with some tweaking, my friend was able to have a rotating light that was actually pretty amazing. Some ingenuity and a little bit of spare parts goes a long way my friends. Stop arguing over which is best and start testing new methods and find your own way to grow! Everyone is different, why can't our growing methods be just as unique and awesome as we are. Remember I say we because, even though some people won't like it, we are all in this fight together. But yeah, the system I saw was growing three large plants, about 4 feet tall with their pots, and my friends harvested almost a pound of sticky-icky that I saw. Two of them were a strain called the Grape and one was a Sensi Star. Good luck everyone!

Hey SC guy your a dumbass. If you are going to give advise here then you should know what your talking about. Its not just about the light. With an indoor setup you can completly control the environment year round. Back to the light though, This system has duplicated all the good qualities of the sun that the plant needs for photosynthesis, while utilizing almost all of the lumens that the light has to offer. Do more research guy.

I like this concept; penetrating the canopy to get the full spectrum to the plant. However this is not the only variable you have to consider. I having grown cannabis plants can say that out door if you can do it is the best because the sun will kick any artificial light sources ass! But if you have the $$$$ this might be the way to go if you have indoor experience; I couldn’t see a first time grower try and run one of these though!! But that’s just my two cents!!!

listen i'm a beginner at this hobby of mine so cut b.s. I really need someone 2 give me the best way 2 have a good yield b 4 the year is over keep it real.

First of all I agree science doesn't lie, there are several descent led lamps out there but you have to sort through the crap to find them the procyon 100 uses cree led's and does great, has increased resin production and comes very close to the yeild of a 400 hps(within 15%). And as for nasa not using led's for 20 years, where do you get your info?

truth in light

Aug 2 2009, 9:55 pm

first, the new factory direct spinner systems cost half the usual price - they are now 1200$.

second, LEDs will never be a truly viable light source for agriculture. all the talk about NASA using them is true - they used them about 20 years ago in trials and have abandoned them about 10 years ago. sure, you can use LEDs to grow food, you can also use flouros, incandescents, halogens hell even a flshlight - but you get crappy food and no one uses those things except for supplemental lighting AT BEST.

dont get sucked in. LEDs are just the new fad - costs have finally come down enough for people to manufacturer and market them so there is a slew of companies out there and a ton of ads, but that doesn't mean squat.

if you want proof, do some research. science does not lie.

these new spinner systems are good but the real treat is the sun pulse bulbs. they offer excellent spectrum and are the only 100 percent compatible bulbs for electronic and digital ballasts.

sure, they are pricey, so in that regard you might want to just go with a few standard HID lamps, which is understandable. but the future is stil in plasma light - which is HID and sunpulse bulbs. not in electro luminescence (LEDs). never going to happen.

But the 600w system costs $2400.00 - about the same amount as one of these spinners (don't think I would buy them either).

LED and spinners are interesting, but I don't want to be experimental, I want to get grams per watt on a consistant basis.

For much less than $2400.00 I think a person could set up a very productive room - way more productive than $2400 in spinny lights or LEDs

I work for a LED grow light company. And I have to say the full spectrum led grow light that i developed especially for growing medical grade cannabis works awesome. Now im not saying my 600w led light will be equal to 2 1000w hps like all those idiots out there are claiming but equal to 1200 hps id say so. growledhydro.com

RE: Cody

So, do you work for the LED company? That comment sounds like a sales pitch and I have never seen an LED that can out grow even the shittiest 70's technology core and coil ballast.

Those spinning lights are garbage and waste hundreds and thousands of dollars. They don't offer half the amount of spectrum's plants need to grow, they makes your energy bill hundreds of dollars and are extremely dangerous!

check out www.NewLifeSupply.com they offer the best price on the same brand grow lights actually used by NASA to grow in space.( They only use 9 watts, offer 100s of wavelengths and legally offer over 6 bands of plant absorbable light)

Pro5 is the only proven led grow light. ( just make sure your environmental temperature is accurate! )

Probably, Yes

Aug 1 2009, 4:00 pm

Spinning lights reduce hot spots in a growroom - unless you live in a really hot place (like AZ), you probably won't need to run an air-conditioner in your room.

Also, the moving lights gets much better canopy penetration than stationary lights.

Even old-school light movers (nothing new about that) are better than well positioned stationary lights.

pootietang420

Aug 1 2009, 3:32 pm

uh, is there any proof that 4 spinning lights is better than 4 well positioned stationary lights (given that all the lights are exactly the same or mixed exactly the same)? Maybe somebody could do an experiment to see if its true? Marijuana.com maybe?
