Halloween is by far my favorite holiday, and nothing makes me happier than spending it in New York City, where there's always so much to do and everyone gets really into the costumed revelry. This year's plans include a stop by the Village Halloween Parade (an annual tradition), a party ominously titled Abaddon that's set to feature live blood wrestling, and an attempt to cramp into Vice's blowout anniversary party in Williamsburg.
The party actually started last night at the co-headlined Mastodon/Dethklok show, which also featured Converge and High on Fire. We got there early enough to catch the support acts, and found dead-center, second-row balcony seats from which we could best …READ MORE -

Though CMJ officially ended this past Saturday night, nothing could have been better* than marking its unofficial close than the metal- and rain-soaked festivities of Friday evening. First off, I attended a Slayer siesta hosted by Metal Insider and scored some fine Simon & Schuster swag courtesy of my favorite quipper, Bram T. And though I'd already been privy to hearing World Painted Blood, Slayer's forthcoming masterpiece, there was something really comforting about listening to it played …READ MOREtags: 0 « add a comment

The weather's taking a turn for the worse, my head is still all sorts of groggy... and I'm about to go do it all again.
Yesterday's keyword was "proximity," as in the spacial closeness that connected the Brooklyn Vegan day show at Piano's with the Tee Pee Records event at Cake Shop. Though Hull disappointingly cancelled their set at the latter, I was able to check out FL's Surfer Blood instead. Sounding like the little cousins of Happy Hollow-era Cursive with a hint of Vampire Weekend, the baby band did well with their catchy indie rock cocktail. After that, I bounced over to Tee Pee and caught Naam, whose intense stoner brown sound threatened to split my hungover skull …READ MOREtags: 0 « add a comment

Sometimes it's better to forgo the unknown and stick with a sure bet; and last night's programming at CMJ inspired just that. Though there were a few bands I was curious to see (like Bang Bang Eche and Atlas Sound), I decided instead to go see Saul Williams headline the Afropunk showcase at Gramercy Theatre.
For those of you not in the know, Saul Williams is a brilliantly prolific singer, musician and poet who embraces electronica, hip-hop, spoken word and rock—then douses it with a glittery aesthetic that David Bowie would be proud of.
Last night's performance …READ MOREtags: 1 « add a comment

New York's CMJ Music Marathon has been an institution for nearly 30 years, originally conceived to help introduce new artists to both the industry and the college radio world. At its height, it was a prestigious event that featured top indie acts like PJ Harvey, Mars Volta, and Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs. But then a few years back, the industry's focus really began shifting to Austin's SxSW megafest, forcing CMJ to go back to its roots of presenting raw talent rather than showpiece big names.
And that's not neccessarily a bad thing. Sure, it might be fun to have bragging rights to some exclusive over-the-top event (A Night of Nothing featuring NIN at Irving Plaza, anyone?), but the lack of …READ MOREtags: 0 « add a comment

We at HIGH TIMES have had long-standing love affairs with both Clutch (who headlined a tour we sponsored several years back) and 2009 Doobie Award winner/stoner rock legend, Wino. So when the two joined forces musically—members of Clutch performed on Wino's brilliant solo album, Punctuating Equilibrium—we knew a live collaboration wasn't far behind.
Happily, Clutch and Wino begin a two-night engagement at NYC's Fillmore at Irving Plaza tonight, and multiple staffers will be in attendance. You should be there, too.
Need further nudging? Just check out this video of Wino's guest turn on Clutch's "Red Horse Rainbow" from this past year's Hellfest.

West Coast stoner rock fans, rejoice: the Fog Rising Festival is coming to San Francisco on Saturday, November 7. The brainchild of Tee Pee Records, Secret Serpents and Converse, the Fog Rising event promises to be "a celebration of the twisted offspring of the fragmentation [that is the rock music scene]."
Among the bands performing are the above-pictured Witch (featuring Dinosaur Jr's J Mascis and my boyfriend, Mario Rubalcaba of …READ MOREtags: 0 « add a comment

It's been an odd few days. I've been so under the weather that simply sitting in front of the computer for more than a half hour has been fatiguing, and I've been napping even more than my kitty. No, it's not H1N1 (I Googled that shit). Thankfully, I'm on the mend, and finally able to share the awesome weekend of shows I had last week—and probably what got me sick in the first place.
First and foremost, we at HIGH TIMES are huge fans of Down and The Melvins. Both bands create unequivocal stoner rock that make us groove and are the stuff of legend, so when news broke that the two would be touring together, I had to be there. Coincidentally enough, their NYC performance was on September 11th, and while many expected some sort of speech about it from Down/Pantera figurehead Phil Anselmo (perhaps comparing it to Nola's tragic Katrina plight), we didn't get it. Instead, the band pummeled through hits like "New Orleans is a Dying Whore," "Bury …READ MORE

It's hard to believe, but one of our favorite punk rock bands, New Jersey's own Bouncing Souls, is turning 20! And what better way to celebrate than a full-on assault of the East Coast before moving the party to Europe in September? If you're in New York City this weekend, you must go see them at Webster Hall on August 20th or 21st where they're playing with Lifetime and 7 Seconds, respectively. The shows are almost sold out, so be …READ MORE

I've said it before: Clutch are like a lumberjack-rock jam band. Always keeping the green machine going, the band is perpetually on tour—only making brief pit stops to create more records.
Well, it's that time of year. The MD-based act released, Strange Cousins From The West, their 27th (kidding, it's actually closer to their ninth full-length) record yesterday, and accordingly, a new video. Here is their brand-new video for the lead track, "5000 Unstoppable Watts."

Hank Williams III - Smoking Good Time
Tue Jun 30, 2009

There are many artists clamoring for the now-vacant title of Hardest Working Man in Show Business, but my vote goes unquestionably to Hank Williams III. The reason is simple: I've never seen another performer play three completely different (yet equally raucous) sets without taking a break in between. So when his tour pulled in to Brooklyn's Music Hall of Williamsburg on the eve of my birthday, I knew I had to be there.
Williams has always been a creative soul with an identity crisis, balancing his love of heavy metal and punk rock with his country pedigree. His approach to expressing these genres is a methodic one: tackle each style, one at a time. Starting off with a traditional country …READ MOREtags: 0 « add a comment

A few weeks ago, I went to see Paul Green's School of Rock All-Stars perform with Metalocalypse's Brendon Small. The show was absolutely spectacular; the kids' talent was awe-inspiring and their range of songs—everything from Slayer's "Angel of Death" to Queen's "Prophet Song"—showed off their extensive appreciation and love for all things loud and guitar-driven.
Opening the show were Tragedy (a glammed-out Bee Gees cover band) and Misstallica, an all-girl Metallica tribute band comprised of current or former School of Rock disciples. I got the chance to speak with two of the foxy ladies before they hit the stage at NYC's B.B. King's about Metallica's spotty career and how weed helps them find their sound. Check it out below (my first video …READ MOREtags: 0 « add a comment

Last night I went to a screening of the VH1 Classic-sponsored documentary, Anvil! The Story of Anvil. Based on the '80s-era Canadian metal band Anvil, who never quite made it financially—nor did they ever manage to secure any sort of legendary status amongst the metal masses—their hard-luck story was captured by long-time fan Sacha Gervasi, who was first introduced to the band's core members of drummer Robb Reiner and singer/guitarist Steve "Lips" Kudlow (from left to right, above) as a 15-year-old fanboy.
It seemed that there were two kinds of people in attendance last night: those who'd merely heard of the band and vaguely remembered seeing ads for their records in Rip magazine (like me), or the full-blown frizzy-haired old-timers who could actually distinguish the nuances between …READ MOREtags: 1 « add a comment
Metalocalypse's Brendon Small Goes To Rock School
Tue Mar 31, 2009
Brendon Small has been summoned back to the stage. But instead of hamming it up with his fellow clandestine musicians as a part of Dethklok—the mythical group around which his Adult Swim series Metalocalypse revolves—he’s doing a mini-tour with Paul Green’s School of Rock All-Stars.
The caravan will spend this week rocking the East Coast like a hurricane, so be sure to check for dates closest to you. Opening the concerts are Tragedy (a metal-inspired Bee Gees cover band) and Misstallica—an all-girl Metallica tribute act that switches personalities on alternate nights to play as Queen Diamond, which heralds the career of Danish shock rocker, King Diamond.
I got a chance to speak with Brendon as he, Paul, and the kids were barreling down the highway on their way to their fist gig at DC’s infamous 9:30 Club. As usual, his …READ MORE

I'm slowly getting my hearing back and remembering what it's like to fall asleep without a beer buzz. South by Southwest '09 is officially over. And though some memories remain a little fuzzy, I've jotted down a couple of highlights from those warm days past in Austin.

After a recount, I can confirm that I caught 38 bands' sets in four days; a breakdown can be found below. Metallica, however, was not among …READ MORE
