Angry At Injustice? Here’s How You Can Help Make A Difference

We ache for the memories of not only George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, but for every other person of color senselessly murdered and brutalized by police officers. This is a systemic issue. It has to end.

As it was for millions of others across the nation, last week was a hard one for us.

As journalists at our core, reporting on current and historical events, and rooting out what caused them, is ingrained in who we are. It’s not only our livelihood, and it’s not just about marijuana—it’s about making sense of the world around us.

For over 45 years High Times has stood up to investigate and shine a light into the starkest realities of our country. It has stood up to call out government hypocrisy, it has stood up to demand accountability from our elected officials, and it has stood up to defend the freedoms human beings deserve, no matter where they are from, or what color their skin is. Dissent is as American as apple pie, and the rebellion from injustice is how this country was formed in the first place… However, we also recognize that there are some things you can’t just report on.

Last week the world witnessed a tragedy on the grandest scale—but it wasn’t an isolated incident. This was a symptom of a much larger problem that exists in this country, and situations just like it are happening every day in even the most liberal states. We ache for the memories of not only George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, but for every other person of color senselessly murdered and brutalized by police officers. This is a systemic issue. It has to end.

In an effort to do more than just stand in solidarity, we have collected a list of resources for those who want to get involved, and those that want to educate themselves (available below). More importantly, we will be using our platform to amplify the voices of those that need to be heard on a much grander scale. We hope you will join us in not only saying ‘enough is enough’, but in holding the system accountable to make the changes we all so gravely need.

For those that are still having trouble wrapping their heads around all this, or who maybe think what’s happening outside is just about one thing, or if you think this isn’t a very real issue, please view the first of these important reposts, a brilliant high-level view of the situation unfolding in America from The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah:

  1. The War on Drugs is the Jim Crow Laws. Cops refused to bust HSBC for laundering drug money to terrorists after 9/11, but they’ll illegally arrest you for meth and heroin. Racism rests inside the notion that it is OK to arrest people for possession of any amount of drug. Drugs are not illegal if it is OK to wage war in Iraq, fighting drug money, for oil.

I’ve never smoked crack and I’ve never chosen to get hooked by keeping on using, but those who cannot stand up and shout that they want crack legalized (decriminalization still funds criminals) are still resting all their weight with the knees on the necks of all black men and women, and yes, Iraqis and Afghan citizens. All tobacco and unhealthy sugary foods are illegal if crystal meth is illegal. Choices over a substance (booze or meth) should never be a loophole to feed racism by keeping one substance illegal and the other hypocritically legal.

Racism dramatically picked up when cops could legally arrest people for drugs and received more and more freedom to do unto people just to search for drugs.

      1. Drug money kills people. Not drugs. Ask iraq. Ask HSBC bank. Juan, at least I don’t brag about raping kids with drug money funded wars and gangs. I’m not bragging about blowing up kids with drug money, like you admit. Zetas. Isis. Taliban.etc.

  2. Anyone who only supports ending Marijuana Prohibition has a 105-year long rap sheet of Racism against Blacks and Mexicans staring with the Harrison Act. In fact, these anti-drug legalization people were also out creating the Klan in the late 1860s. If drugs were meant to be illegal, then Explain British Hong Kong.

  3. MAJOR CULTURE TRAIN WRECK. You want not just weed but smack, crack, moons. You also don’t seem to understand why people are arrested for shooting.stabbing an killing people of there own color ,an in record numbers .WTF

    1. juan, I can prove I’m smarter than you. Have you ever heard of mena, arkansas? What did you learn living in mexico, europe, and iraq? Cops can quit any time. Not soldiers. The laws are fake when cops can quit their job just like that. hsbc bank anyone? Pay your tax for drug laws and iraq is adding 1 and 1 to get to zero. Gangs use the drug laws to make money and then they rape. If juan refuses to donate 60% of his income to Iraqi children, then he makes the choice to not help, which is harm.

Next time juan, write and think like a man, not a chained up slave. You are a Mexican terrorist, you los zeta, you u.s. Military trained murderer and rapist.

    2. AMEN, IF YOU ARE NOT A CRIMINAL, & HAVE EVIDENCE YOU ARE ONE, HOW’S THAT RACIST?? DEMOCRATS HAVE PUSHED THE WORDS “RACIST”,& “WHITE SUPREMACIST” TO SHAME & CONTROL “WHITE AMERICANS” SINCE THAT SCAMMED AMERICANS INTO A AFRICAN INDONESIAN OBAMA IN OUR WHITE HOUSE, & HE IS WORSE TERRORIST IN AMERICA! SINCE 2008-NOW, OBAMA & DEMOCRATS THROWN THESE WORDS OUT EVERYTIME HIS & MICHELLE OBAMA’S MOUTH OPENED! DEMOCRATS, ONLY WANT BLACK VOTERS BECAUSE THEY USE THE PAST & BRAINWASHING AFRICAN AMERICANS INTO BELIEVING THEY GIVE A RATS ASS ABOUT THEM, WHAT A JOKE, THEY WANT AFRICAN AMERICANS, BECAUSE THE MAJORITY ARE UNEDUCATED, & HAVE A BIG MOUTH, & WILL SAY & DO ANYTHING, BECAUSE BLACKS CAN NOT BE SHAMED!!!

THE DEMOCRATS WANT AFRICAN AMERICANS TO DESTROY AMERICA, BY STARTING A “RACE WAR” USING A CRIMINALS “GEORGE FLOYD’S DEATH, TO RAISE HELL AT WHITE PEOPLE, BECAUSE OF THEIR RACIST HATE FOR THEIR FAILURES IN LIFE, IT WAS NOT THE KNEE, BUT BLAME EVERY WHITE AMERICAN!! THE DEMOCRATS WANT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE UNDER SOCIALISM!! WELL, WHEN HELL FREEZES OVER! “WHITES” ARE NOT AS “RACIST” AS “BLACKS” ARE..FACT! THEY DON’T GIVE A RATS ASS ABOUT THEIR OWN RACE MURDERING THEIR OWN PEOPLE, BUT WILL USE A BLACK DEATH BY A “WHITE POLICE OFFICER”, A REASON TO RAISE HELL & DESTROY OTHERS HARD WORKING BUSINESSES! BUT,WHEN WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH, PUSHING LIES ABOUT WHITES, & YOU WILL SEE WHAT WILL HAPPEN, ..”GAME OVER”!!!

      1. AGREE 100%

        THE BLACKS R THE RACISTS

4 bad cops in Minnesota doesn’t make everyone racist

WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW way to lump all whites into one group, sounds racist to me

HOLY SHIT ARE BLACKS OUT OF LINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Your industry has impacted bipoc communities at a disproportionate rate, what are YOU doing to financially help those communities?! It’s all well and good to ask your readers to financially help, but what are you doing?

  5. Funny and sad at the same time to see that you are all ping pong balls in the oldest political strategy ever : divide and conquer… Black vs white , Male vs female , etc etc… You are all being Mk’ed…

  6. Two steps for restoring justice for citizens regarding cannabis plants and marijuana in this election year:

Step 1: We contact the candidates for Congress about reconstructing the current malformed federal definition of Schedule 1 marijuana to make it literally remove the systemic racism imbued in the term “marihuana”, clearly define how marijuana is actually derived from cannabis plants, and uphold the 2nd, 9th, 10th, and 14th Amendment rights of citizens regarding cannabis plants, thereby carefully descheduling cannabis plants, restoring and protecting citizens’ rights to grow and carefully use cannabis plants, and reducing the abuse of qualified immunity by police enforcing the prohibition of cannabis plants under the guise of marijuana prohibition, like this:

    Sec. 802.
    (16) The term “marijuana” means all parts of the smoke produced by the combustion of the plant Cannabis sativa L., which is, as are the viable seeds of such plant, prohibited to be grown by or sold by any publicly traded corporation or subsidiary company, and such smoke is prohibited to be inhaled by any child or by any person bearing any firearm, as is their intake of any part or any product of such plant containing more than 0.3% THC by weight unless prescribed to such child by an authorized medical practitioner.

Step 2: We contact the candidates for Congress about removing newly-defined marijuana from Schedule 1 by reconsidering the adulterated medical value of cannabis smoke, thereby either descheduling or rescheduling marijuana at the federal level while retaining the limited federal prohibitions of cannabis plant use that will continue to control the undesired proliferation of cannabis smoke.

It should be easy because this malformed definition is what we’re up against:

    Sec. 802.
(16)(A) Subject to subparagraph (B), the term “marihuana” means all parts of the plant Cannabis sativa L., whether growing or not; the seeds thereof; the resin extracted from any part of such plant; and every compound, manufacture, salt, derivative, mixture, or preparation of such plant, its seeds or resin.
    (B) The term “marihuana” does not include (i) hemp, as defined in section 1639o of title 7; or (ii) the mature stalks of such plant, fiber produced from such stalks, oil or cake made from the seeds of such plant, any other compound, manufacture, salt, derivative, mixture, or preparation of such mature stalks (except the resin extracted therefrom), fiber, oil, or cake, or the sterilized seed of such plant which is incapable of germination.

  7. I’m a NORML supporter and an old reader of your mag and saw on twitter a link for your site that I might want to follow and it brought back memories and thought I would even get a subscription and then I seen this Marxist article and now I have my reservations.
Although I don’t really look black I don’t look white either, my grandfather was listed a Mulatto along with my great-grandparents and a couple generations back I found my ancestor who was a freed slave in Alabama with his wife and children but I DESPISE BLM, ANTIFA and any other Marxist or anti-American group!

  8. I don’t know why is the medical marijuana is under rated and not considered as a medical drug.
We live in a society where alcohol is considered legal with a lot of health issues and medical marijuana though curing aot of medical ailnes is still illegal in many of the states. The federal government sees marijuana as a highly addictive drug and of no medical value. And doctors are yet not allowed to prescribe medical marijuana under federal law. Moreover the Federal government thinks Marijuana is not a medical drug and has prohibited marijuana for all purposes. In support of the numerous states that have taken responsibility for the health and welfare of their people, and have implemented medical marijuana laws, ASA is fighting for states’ ability and right to pass and enforce their own laws, regardless of federal law. https://mdberry.com/5-compelling-reasons-medical-marijuana-doctors-essential-healthcare-system/
