Are Transdermal Cannabis Patches Better Than Smoking?

High Times sat down with Mary’s Medicinals for four questions about their transdermal cannabis patches at the US Cannabis Cup in Seattle — check it out!:

Tell us about the product you brought out the Seattle Cannabis Cup this year.

We make transdermal cannabis products and cannabis supplements. Today we’re talking a lot about our patches — it’s the first transdermal cannabis product that is cleanly delivered and medical-grade. You can put it on your wrist and it lasts 8-12 hours. It also comes in six different varieties — indica, sativa, hybrid and then isolated cannabinoids like CBD and CBN. We also have a few other products like gels and CBC compounds that are good to supplement your patch.

What’s the science behind that patch?

The patch itself works similar to a nicotine patch. It delivers the cannabis straight into your bloodstream, which is the most efficient way to medicate. You avoid all of the side-effects of smoking or eating it. When you’re putting it into your bloodstream, it is much more efficient. So one 10mg patch is equivalent to maybe an 80mg edible. Most of the THC is going into your bloodstream instead of being broken down by your stomach acid. It’s the most efficient way to medicate.

How long have you had the patches on the market?

We launched in Colorado about a year ago and then we came to Washington just a month ago. We’re in medical stores now and we’ll be in recreational in about two months.

What do you guys think of the crowd at the US Cannabis Cup in Seattle?

It’s fantastic! There are a lot of people interested in the product and we’re feeling great about it.
