Actors don’t actually smoke weed in the movies, right? Typically, the answer is no. Movie studios normally provide their on-screen employees with “movie pot,” which is essentially a blend of tobacco (depending on whether or not the particular actor smokes), or a haphazard non-cannabis herb like oregano or parsley.
However, this wasn’t the case for Kirsten Dunst on the set of her upcoming drama “Woodshock.” Dunst’s character in the film is a heavy weed smoker, so naturally, there were a lot of scenes where she had to pretend to be smoking the herb herself. But while shooting one scene, there was no pretending involved.
Appearing on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” to promote the weed flick, Dunst admitted she mistook a real joint for a prop joint and ended up smoking the entire thing before realizing it was the real deal.
According to Dunst, the results weren’t pretty.
“I wasn’t eating that much at the time, and so after we were done with the scene, I go back to this little bedroom to rest, and I started to feel like I was losing my mind,” Dunst told Kimmel on his show Tuesday night. “I went to the bathroom. I’m pacing. I’m shaking. I’m hot. I’m just flipping out.”
After the incident, one of Dunst’s producers decided to get to the bottom of what was making the actress, for lack of better terms, freak the fuck out. It wasn’t long before he deduced that Dunst was high as a kite.
The producer’s explanation for the “Spider-Man” actress was simple: “‘Oh, you smoked a full blunt on one of the takes,'” Dunst recalled.
Dunst, an admitted cannabis user herself, claimed this wasn’t your grandfather’s shake, either.
“And we’re talking about Humboldt weed,” explained Dunst. “I don’t smoke full joints. This is like strong shit.”
How did real weed get on set, you ask? Dunst claimed some friendly Humboldt locals rolled a couple of real joints, in addition to the movie joints they provided for the set.
“Well, they had locals roll the joints for us, and they just threw some in for fun,” Dunst explained.
In the end, Dunst was deemed far too zooted to continue working that day, so she was sent home to sober up.
“I was like crying, laughing, eating a peanut butter sandwich,” she recalled. “I couldn’t film anymore. They sent me home. I was a total mess. I’ve never been that stoned in my entire life.”
We’ve all been there, Kirsten. Just not on the set of an upcoming feature film.
