11 Of Our Favorite Celebrity Stoner Dads

Sunday is Father’s Day, so when remembering everything you need to thank your dad for, don’t forget those times he ignored you smoking in the garage or “didn’t smell” it on your clothes (really, Dad, thanks).

Today, we salute 11 celebrity dads doing their part to advance marijuana in our culture or homes, or for just being plain cool with cannabis.

*Note: “Unnamed child” means that the child’s name has intentionally not been released to media.

1. Matthew McConaughey

Father To: Levi Alves, Vida Alves and Livingston Alves McConaughey

McConaughey is the kind of dad you wished you had known when younger—not only did he enter stoners’ hearts as David Wooderson in 1993’s Dazed and Confused, he was arrested in 1999 in a bongo session that left him a little too stoned. Who knows what gold we still have left coming in McConnaissance?

2. Dave Chappelle

Father To: Sonal, Sulayman and Ibrahim Chappelle

Like many of the dads on this list, Chappelle has a history with marijuana that deserves a piece all its own. That said, even the most experienced of stoners should be careful around unknown ganja: on one of his new comedy specials, Chappelle revealed the reason he was booed off stage in Detroit in 2015 was that he got too high backstage with a rapper. Always know what strain you’re smoking!

3. Willie Nelson

Father To: Lana , Susie , Amy Lee, Paula Carlene, Lana, Lukas, Jacob Micah and Billy Nelson (deceased)

Any attempt here to summarize Nelson’s association with weed would be a disservice, as too much would be left out. Nelson is like your favorite hippy grandfather, though your grandfather probably isn’t cool enough to have his own marijuana line.

4. George Carlin

Father To: Kelly Carlin

The late Carlin was a huge proponent of weed, telling Playboy in 1982 that he’d consistently smoked for almost 30 years: “I’d wake up in the morning and if I couldn’t decide whether I wanted a joint or not, I’d smoke a joint to figure it out. And I stayed high all day long. When people asked me, ‘Do you get high to go onstage?’ I could never understand the question. I mean, I’d been high since eight that morning. Going onstage had nothing to do with it.”

5. Wiz Khalifa

Father To: Sebastian Taylor Thomaz

Khalifa has an entire discography showing his appreciation of weed, but he’s the only person on this list to have an app showing it. Wiz Khalifa’s Weed Farm allows you to join the weed industry and show off your business skills, though no comments here on the quality of the game.

6. Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Father To: Unnamed child

Gordon-Levitt was very open with Playboy about the importance of marijuana and acid in his creative process, noting that he thinks marijuana is unfairly demonized. Of particular interest is a little insight on what he smokes: “I don’t pay attention to the strains that much, but I know they say sativa is more up and indica is more down. I don’t like the sleepy ones. I never get that, so I always buy sativa.”

7. Kevin Smith

Father To: Harley Quinn Smith

Smith started smoking weed because of his work with Seth Rogen on Zach and Miri Make a Porno, though the subculture already loved him because of films like Clerks. While Smith seems like a cool dad—you don’t just name your child “Harley Quinn” if you’re not eccentric—some argue pot may be messing with the quality of his films.

8. Woody Harrelson

Father To: Deni Montana, Zoe Giordano and Makani Ravello Harrelson

Harrelson has been a smoker and advocate for decades, so today we offer more of a tribute: Harrelson recently admitted he stopped smoking, saying that “I feel like it was keeping me from being emotionally available.” Today, raise your joint in honor of one of favorite reformed dads.

9. Zach Galifianakis

Father To: Unnamed child and Rufus Emmanuel Lundberg

Galifianakis is your friend’s dad that just doesn’t seem to really give a fuck. He famously lit up on live TV with Bill Maher back in 2010, when the social and political landscape surrounding weed was much different. Maher would later deny that it was real marijuana, but ya know, that’s just what he’s supposed to say.

10. Anthony Bourdain

Father To: Ariane Bourdain

Bourdain kicked a well-documented drug habit years ago, but told Men’s Journal in 2012 that he still enjoys smoking. Not only that, but it might be an important part of the cooking process: “Chefs are in the pleasure business, and it’s important to understand your subject. If you know what it’s like to be stoned and hungry at one o’clock in the morning, it’s helpful when you’re trying to create a menu for people who are stoned and hungry at one o’clock in the fucking morning. How does it affect your palate? I’m going to try to be careful about this. If you look at the landscape of great chefs, top-tier chefs, it doesn’t seem to hurt them too badly. It might even have helped.”

11. Tim Robbins

Father To: Miles and Jack Henry Robbins

Robbins has always been a fan of weed legalization, joining “Artists for 64” to support legalization in California. While he’s admitted to former usage, he’s stayed mum on his current habits. Considering that ex-wife Susan Sarandon told High Times in 2015 that, “I’ve said in print that I would rather have my kids smoking weed than drinking,” it’s safe to say Miles and Jack will grow up in a very pot-friendly household.
