When it comes to toking up, you can never go wrong smoking out of a glass bowl. Sure, it doesn’t come with too many bells and whistles, but it’s basically the ol’ reliable of marijuana paraphernalia.
The Number Two Ticonderoga of cannabis consumption, if you will.
Properly packing a bowl, while not necessarily a skill, is something that does require a little bit of practice. Sometimes, the bowl gets packed too tight, sometimes, too loose, and other times, just plain sloppily. We’re here to fix some of those small errors. Before you know it, you’ll be packing the perfect bowl like it’s your day job.
Let’s take a look at how to properly pack a bowl.
How To Pack A Bowl Of Weed
Again, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know how to properly pack a bowl of weed. Nonetheless, a perfect pack could be the difference-maker in a smoke sesh. Packing a bowl too tight could lead to some inevitable hitches, and packing the bowl too loose could make all your bud fly out—especially if you’re smoking outside and there’s a little bit of wind. Then, there’s always the smoothness factor, which directly correlates with how the bowl is packed.
But luckily, it only takes five easy steps to learn how to pack a bowl of weed.
Let’s start with step one.
Step One: Choose Your Strain
This first step, essentially, is just doing the necessary fieldwork: choosing the right strain. It’s all about the type of high you’re aiming for. If you’re looking for a daytime high, you’re probably going to want to pick up some sativa. If it’s later in the day and you’re just looking to veg out and watch some Rick and Morty, maybe grab a nice indica. Additionally, some nugs are stickier than others, and some are denser. This all comes into play when actually packing the bowl as well.
Step Two: Break It Up
Step two of how to properly pack a bowl is simply breaking up the weed. Now, there are several ways you can do this: using a grinder, breaking up by hand, or using one of these techniques for grinding weed without a grinder. We recommend against using a grinder for a bowl. Here’s why: if the weed is ground too finely, it becomes a little more difficult to pack. Grinding it up is ideal for a blunt or a joint, but we prefer to just break it up by hand when it comes to smoking a bowl.
Step Three: Grab The Bud
How to pack a bowl step three: grabbing the bud.
Sounds like a Star Wars movie title.
While step three sounds like common sense, you’d be surprised how many people actually mess this one up. Instead of simply dumping the weed into the bowl, use your index finger and thumb to pinch the weed and place it in the bowl. This way, you can control the amount you place in the bowl, so it’s optimally packed. If you just dump all of your weed in, you’re going to, most likely A) spill a bunch of weed everywhere, B) overstuff the bowl or C) all of the above.
That, in itself, would be a tragedy.
Step Four: Pat It Down
Now comes the actual act of ‘packing’. You put the bud in the bowl, but it’s not over quite yet. Again, to get the most out of your buds, while simultaneously taking the smoothest hits possible, learning how to properly pack a bowl is integral for your smoking career.
When packing a bowl, make sure you put your bigger chunks of bud in first. This acts a support for the rest of the weed you’re going to place on top. If you happen to have a screen in there, even better, but sometimes a screen can be a bit of a nuisance.
From there, place the smaller buds on top, and try to disperse it as evenly as possible. Fill to the top, and pat it down tight, but not too tight where it restricts air flow. Your optimal bowl should be completely even and filled to the brim.
Step Five: Light It Up!
It’s safe to say step five is a fan favorite. Now that you know how to pack a bowl of weed, it’s time to light up! Of course, there are some tips on how to properly smoke a bowl as well, so for novice smokers, your journey isn’t quite over yet. However, you’re certainly well on your way to toking up on the reg! Especially now that you know how to pack a bowl of weed.
