Lot’s of people are making the transition from the illicit marijuana market to the legal, regulated system in their state. And unless you were already in the know, or had a scale to check your dealer’s accuracy, you probably worked off the eighth system.

And in the eighth system, you’re either buying an eighth, a quarter, a half, or a whole ounce. Hence most people never give a thought to fact that an eighth is 3.5437 grams. Or realized that most cheap scales only measure in tenths of grams, meaning dealers round down to 3.5 grams out of necessity (and mathematical convenience).

We start with a conversion scale of 3.5 grams to an eighth. That makes it easy to solve, how many grams in an ounce? If an ounce is eight eighths, that’s 3.5 grams x 8, or 28 grams in an ounce, for all intents and purposes.

But if we hadn’t rounded down the original eighth to 3.5, there’s a different answer to how many grams in an ounce. More accurately, it’s 28.35 grams. Where’d that extra .35 grams go? If not a personal joint, that’s easily enough for a good bowl pack! (FYI, an average joint contains about .4-.5 grams of flower.)

Grams To Ounces

An ounce of weed is not an insignificant portion. If an eighth will last an average smoker two weeks give or take, an ounce can satisfy one person’s demand for cannabis for several months! A quarter or half ounce purchase is often the most practical. Here are those conversions.

• 1 quarter oz. = 7 grams
• 1 half oz. = 14 grams
• 3/4 oz. = 21 grams

This scale comes in handy as you’re adapting to legal recreational sales. If you purchase, say, two grams each of a hybrid, indica, and sativa strain, you’re walking out with just under a quarter ounce of weed. If you bought four grams of locally grown, organic, pesticide-free Blue Dream, that’s like buying a heavy eighth. You get the picture.
