Cafe Selling CBD Flower and Infused Coffee Opens in Ireland

Bloom's Café isn't much like its Amsterdam counterparts, but it does serve a nice cup of cannabis-infused coffee.

Ireland may not have legal adult-use cannabis with the country’s Minister of Health only allowing medicinal use on a case-by-case basis. But legal barriers haven’t prevented Blooms Cafe from becoming the first cafe in Ireland to sell cannabis flower and infused coffee. Located in Waterford City, Blooms sells cannabis and hemp botanicals that are rich in CBD but have negligible (i.e. legal) levels of THC.

Blooms Cafe Offers High CBD Strains and Infused Coffee, But No THC

Despite being Ireland’s first cannabis coffee shop, Blooms isn’t much like its legendary Amsterdam counterparts. In the first place, the shop isn’t a place for consuming cannabis. Customers can’t consume their cannabis in the cafe or on the sidewalks outside it. And second, Blooms doesn’t sell anything with THC in it.

In order to stay legal, all of the cafe’s cannabis products cannot exceed the legal limit of 0.2 percent THC. And that limits the cannabis flowers to CBD-only strains or simply hemp. Packaging from Bloom’s indicates the hemp and CBD strains are grown in Croatia.

Blooms does let patrons enjoy their cannabis on site, though, in CBD-infused coffee drinks.

Ireland Opens Its First Cannabis Cafe

The cannabis plant produces hundreds of different compounds called cannabinoids. These chemical compounds interact with our body to create a range of therapeutic and pleasing sensations. But not all cannabinoids in cannabis contribute to making a consumer high. That honor goes to THC and its variants. CBD, however, does not produce psychotropic effects and exists in substantial quantities in both cannabis and hemp plants.

Because it isn’t a psychoactive substance and producers can source it from hemp, CBD is often a legal substance. It also happens to be one of the most well-researched cannabinoids. Across numerous studies spanning decades, researchers have shown CBD to be a safe and effective treatment for a variety of diseases and symptoms. CBD reduces inflammation, heals nerves, slows the spread of cancerous tumors and counterbalances some of the negative effects of THC. Given this incredible therapeutic potential, analysts expect the CBD market to blossom to $2.1 billion over the next few years.

Seeing an opening to capitalize on its increasingly mainstream appeal rapidly growing consumer interest, companies are starting to offer CBD products and services in places where cannabis is otherwise illegal. And now it seems the trend has caught up to Ireland.

Blooms Cafe has taken the lead, becoming the first cannabis cafe in Ireland. For tourists and residents, you’ll find the cozy establishment tucked away at 50 John Street in Waterford City.
