High Times announced today that it is bringing its series of Cannabis Cup: People’s Choice Edition events to Illinois this summer, with a contest to find the state’s top cannabis products kicking off in August. High Times, the most well-known brand in cannabis, launched the virtual versions of its signature Cannabis Cup events this spring in response to restrictions on large gatherings brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Cannabis Cup Illinois: People’s Choice Edition will bring the state’s premier cannabis brands to the largest pool of judges in history to identify and recognize the best products across a range of categories. The first-ever High Times Cannabis Cup in Illinois is produced in association with dispensary partners Verano Holdings’ ZenLeaf dispensary, Rise, a cannabis retailer operated by Green Thumb Industries (CSE: GTII; GTBIF), and BEYOND / HELLO™, the retail brand of Jushi Holdings Inc. (CSE: JUSH; OTCQX: JUSHF) to provide judge kit pickup locations in Effingham, Niles, St. Charles, Sauget, and Normal, IL.

“We are excited to see the Cannabis Cup come to the Illinois market, as we continue to grow as an industry,” said Rise Illinois district manager Derrick Levy in an email to High Times. “This is a great opportunity for all of Illinois to come together and celebrate the legalization of cannabis in our home state.”

Call For Entries

The  Cannabis Cup Illinois: People’s Choice Edition will feature products from 8 different categories, including indica, sativa, and hybrid flower, pre-rolls, solvent concentrates, non-solvent concentrates, vape pens or cartridges, and edibles. Half pound of flower, Quarter pound of concentrates, or 60 units of edibles are required for each entry. Entry fees are $500 for one entry, $250 per entry for two entries, and High Times will waive all entry fees for three or more entries. The Cup is open to both recreational and medicinal products, which must be grown and produced in Illinois by a facility licensed by the Department of Agriculture.

Entry intake will occur between August 17 and 20 at locations in St. Charles, Effingham, and Chicago. Judging kits will be available for pickup and judging between August 25 and September 23. All adults at least 21 years old and medical marijuana patients 18 and up qualify as judges. Results of the Cup will be announced Saturday, September 26 during an online awards presentation.

High Times announced in March that it was taking its series of Cannabis Cups online in response to the growing coronavirus outbreak. The inaugural High Times Hemp Cup, which had been scheduled to take place as a traditional in-person event in Austin, Texas, was instead held online on April 4, recognizing results in eight categories. The High Times Cannabis Cup Oklahoma: People’s Choice Edition began judging in May and results were announced at an online awards show on June 27. Judging kits for Cannabis Cup Colorado: People’s Choice Edition are available now, with results slated to be announced on August 2.

  1. Wonder if state taxes are applied in addition to the cost of the judges kits in Illinois? Does anyone know if how this has been done in other states previously?

  2. Is this like Detroit’s? Like is there going to be tents set up with stuff to purchase and samples and can you smoke there?

  3. I signed up to judge. When will I get more information regarding cost including taxes, pick up process, (I know the location).
