In a Las Vegas showroom, the car that Tupac Shakur died in is up for sale. For a cool $1.5 million, you can own the actual vehicle in which the critically acclaimed poet and musician was shot to death. Here are all the details.
Who Was Tupac Shakur?
Tupac Shakur was an American rapper. Active in the music scene from 1987 until his untimely death in 1996, Tupac is widely regarded as one of the most influential rappers of all time. He was born in 1971 in the Manhattan neighborhood of East Harlem.
His mother, father, stepfather and various other family members were members of the Black Panther Party. His mother, Afeni Shakur, was acquitted of over 150 charges in New York’s infamous Panther 21 trial one month before he was born.
His godmother was the freedom fighter-turned-fugitive, Assata Shakur, who has been on the FBI’s “Most Wanted Terrorist” list for almost 40 years.
Tupac’s debut album was titled “2Pacalypse Now”. The album, like the majority of his music, is known for combining scathing criticism of social and political injustice with poetic lyrics.
On September 7, 1996, in Las Vegas, Tupac was shot four times by an unknown assailant in a drive-by shooting. He had been in a car, a 1996 BMW 7 series owned by the record label Death Row Records, that was stopped at a traffic light. He was put in a medically induced coma and died six days later on Friday, September 13.
Today, the murder of Tupac Shakur remains largely unsolved and thus surrounded by mystery, controversy and speculation. One theory involves the late rapper’s rival, Notorious B.I.G., who was murdered in a drive-by shooting six months later in Los Angeles.
The Las Vegas-based automobile consignment dealership Celebrity Cars is currently selling a 1996 BMW 7 series, originally owned by Death Row Records. In other words, this company is selling the car that Tupac Shakur died in.
“This is the actual car that Tupac Shakur was shot while riding in,” Celebrity Cars’ website proudly proclaims.
“This is the first time this car has ever been up for sale or on display since his death in 1996. It has been completely restored to the condition it was in before his death and has just received a new coat of paint.
There is a small indentation where we believe one of the bullet holes was but it is hard to tell…The wheels have been replaced with the same wheels that it had at the time of the shooting.”
