There’s no denying the landscape of legal marijuana has made a dent in people’s perceptions of the plant. Decades ago, the green leaf served as a representation of marijuana counterculture. Now, however, with it’s increasing legality, it represents a sweeping change throughout our nation, as we move towards a foreseeable end to prohibition. While this is certainly good news for most of us, some hardcore stoners apparently prefer the rush of smoking the illegal stuff. At least one staple of the cannabis community apparently thinks so, as Cheech and Chong say that weed lost its edge thanks to legalization.
On ‘The Late Show’ last night, host Stephen Colbert seemed genuinely surprised that former GOP House Speaker John Boehner had done a complete 180 regarding his views on cannabis.
The Republican lawmaker was a notoriously staunch opponent of marijuana legalization, but apparently has changed his tune, seemingly overnight. Earlier this month, the man who once declared he was ‘unalterably opposed’ to the decriminalization of the plant, announced he was appointed to the board of directors for Acreage Holdings, a multi-state cannabis business fighting for lesser marijuana restrictions.
Colbert, stunned by the news, figured he’d need to check in with two ‘experts’ in pot culture and welcomed Tommy Chong and Cheech Marin to the show, via live stream.
According to the duo, the Boehner news served as a bit of a bummer.
“Actually Stephen, we think this news sucks,” Marin said. “I mean, pot used to be rebellious.”
“Yeah, now crusty old Republicans like John Boehner are into it,” Chong added.”Pots over, man.”
“So you’re not excited about legalization?”Colbert asked.
“No way man! It’s boring.” Marin exclaimed. “The last time I bought weed it was in a store in a strip mall.”
Colbert then asked where Cheech used to score his bud.
“BEHIND a store in a strip mall,” he quipped.
The duo then announced that, while they would not be giving up on comedy, they would be getting away from pot-humor, and on to “edgier stuff’.’
You know, like things that are actually still illegal, like unpasteurized dairy products, importing exotic reptiles, burning leaves without a permit, and, of course, taping and distributing football games without the express written consent of the NFL.
What a bunch of badasses.
Unless your completely oblivious to satire, the duo was clearly joking around about their new disdain for the green. If there are any two people happy about the increasing legality of marijuana, it’s Cheech and Chong, the comedy duo that was instrumental in bringing the plant into mainstream entertainment. Both men have lent their voices to the cannabis revolution, and Cheech Marin recently even starred in a commercial ushering new California pot businesses to properly register with the state.
So, as per usual, these dudes were just joking around. And, as per usual, it was freaking hilarious.
