Nova Scotia

Legal age to buy cannabis: 19

Estimated price: Unknown

Public Smoking: Legal

Nova Scotia’s laws mirror those put forth nationally. You can have up to 30 grams of marijuana and you can grow a maximum of 4 plants. A distinguishing area of Nova Scotian legislation is how seriously it addresses the legal age of cannabis consumption. If someone under 19 is caught with more than 5 grams of weed, they will be charged with drug possession, which is a criminal offense.

The Nova Scotia Cannabis Control Act also lays out severe penalties for driving under the influence. Whereas Quebec will suspend your license for 90 days, Nova Scotian police will suspend it for a year and fine you between $1,000 and $2,000 dollars. The penalty for driving under the influence of marijuana a second time is 30 days jail time.

The Smoke-Free Places Act will also be cracking down on public smoking. According to these new regulations, you won’t be able to smoke within 20 meters of an outdoor sports center or playground, within 9 meters of hiking trails or on a beach or in a park, except if its a private campsite. This leaves few, if any, places where lighting up will be legal.

Additionally, Nova Scotia is considering legislation that would allow landlords to ban marijuana. If enacted, this law would give landlords the right to evict for marijuana use. This would prevent non-home owners from growing or smoking the now legal herb.
