MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican prosecutors say they have caught a leading opium trafficker for the Sinaloa cartel in the southern state of Guerrero.
The Attorney General’s Office says the man is suspected in the killings of law enforcement officers and a local politician. He was identified as Vicente Carrillo Salmeron.
Prosecutors allege that Carrillo Salmeron oversaw the growing and trafficking of marijuana and opium and that he was “one of the main causes of violence” in the region.
Federal police said Tuesday that Carrillo Salmeron was arrested along with his bodyguard in the resort city of Acapulco in possession of guns, cocaine and methamphetamines.
His gang was apparently linked to the April 25 shooting death of local politician Rey Hernandez of the opposition Labor Party.
