On Wednesday night, Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders stole the spotlight from the GOP debate by announcing that if elected, he plans to remove marijuana from the federal drug list.
While not completely unexpected (Sanders had been hinting that he was in favor of ending prohibition), Sanders’ official announcement is being heralded as huge move. Eliminating pot’s classification as a Schedule I drug would essentially legalize the leaf at the national level, allowing states to freely set up legal cannabis markets in any manner they see fit.
One audience member sitting behind Sanders as he gave his speech obviously realized the magnitude of this announcement.
“Oh, sh!t,” the man appears to mouth.
