Sir Patrick Stewart has entered the ring in a 6-year-old’s battle for access to medical marijuana.

While cannabis is considered a viable medication in many facets of the world, there are still many places skeptical of the once-taboo plant. Namely, the U.K., where it remains illegal for most medical patients to adequately harness the power of medical marijuana. While CBD oil has become increasingly available throughout the UK, it’s nearly impossible to get your hands on the plant itself, as it still remains illegal under Parliment law.

Alfie Dingley, a 6-year-old UK resident, suffers from an extremely rare form of epilepsy. While living in Holland, Dingley was able to get his hands on the oil after a doctor recommended it. It was a major success.

Dingley typically suffered up to 150 seizures a month. When he was taking the oil, he hadn’t had an episode in 24 days. But when he returned to the U.K., further usage of the plant was forbidden.

A campaign has begun to help the boy receive the treatment that could potentially save his life, and there’s one celebrity at the forefront of the battle—Sir Patrick Stewart.

Sir Patrick Stewart In Dingley’s Corner

Sir Patrick Stewart voiced his support for Dingley’s battle on Monday after the youngster was hospitalized three times in four weeks since his return from Holland.

“How could one not support Alfie?” Stewart said to the Press Association.

“Hearing what his life has been and the benefits given to him by being able to use medicinal marijuana. There has never been a stronger case for the legalization of medical marijuana.”

Stewart is a known cannabis-user and active advocate of medical marijuana. The actor has admitted to using a topical cannabis spray to help with arthritis in his hands, and was forced to apply for a medical card in California after not being able to get his hands on the plant in the UK.

However, Stewart claims that cannabis has helped his ailments like no other.

“I have been registered for medical marijuana in California for over three years and have found it immensely beneficial for my arthritis,” he said. “I had to have eight steroid injections in my fingers and knuckles, which was about as painful as anything one could imagine, because medicinal cannabis is not available here.”

But despite Dingley’s pressing needs, his family is unwilling to go against government legislation. Rather, they are attempting to legally petition to get the OK for their son to harness the plant.

“This is our six-year-old son, we’re not going to put something into him that’s in any way illegal,”  Dingley’s father explained. “What we’re asking for is a medical grade product, made under laboratory conditions, which is bottled and prescribed in the way any painkiller is.”

Final Hit: Sir Patrick Stewart Advocates For 6-Year-Old Medical Cannabis Patient

In addition to Sr Patrick Stewart, several other prominent names have voiced their support of Dingley, including Joanna Lumley and Sir Richard Branson.

At this point, it appears as if Dingley’s trials and tribulations are just a matter of semantics. Because if the UK Parliment really wants to do what’s right, the six-year-old would have already had his medication by now.

For Dingley’s parents, it’s just a matter of getting their son back on track.

“We just want our little boy back, our happy little six-year-old playing with his sister,” Mr. Dingley said.
