Rick Simpson Oil is cannabis oil made with techniques that are easy to replicate at home. According to Rick Simpson, the best strains for making Rick Simpson Oil or RSO are “very potent and sedative medicinal Indica varieties.” Keeping it indica-dominant and potent, we narrowed it down to the 8 best strains for making Rick Simpson oil.
Platinum OG was number one out of Michigan on our 2016 strongest strains on earth list. The medical sample tested at 27 percent THC. Platinum is one of the first strains to test at over 20 percent THC regularly. Platinum OG is an indica-dominant strain associated with heavy physical sedation which makes it one of the best strains for making Rick Simpson Oil.
Motor Breath is an indica strain that has been rapidly accumulating awards over the last couple of years. In fact, it recently won number one indica at the 2017 SoCal Cannabis Cup. Motor Breath is also a popular potent strain in Michigan because it was given 2nd place indica at the midwest cannabis cup in 2017. It also turned up twice on our strongest strains list of 2017 with THC percentages at 29 percent and 25 percent.
Symbiotic Genetics bred the popular indica Purple Punch by crossing Larry OG with Granddaddy Purple. The strain was brought into popularity by the expert cultivators at The Village and Jungle Boys. The buds are typically caked in trichomes with hues of purple and the smell of cream, berries and grapes. Purple Punch made it into the top 5 indica flowers and top 10 concentrates at the 2017 NorCal cup.
Kosher Kush is an indica strain by Reserva Privada which is a part of DNA Genetics. It has a pungent, floral and earthy smell. Kosher Kosh nugs are short, stout, dense and frosty. The strain won the High Times cannabis cup best indica 2010, best strain 2011 as well as best indica in the 2012 and 2015 medical cups. The heavily awarded strain is still in-demand in 2018.
Parents are both cannabis cup award-winning strains bred by DNA Genetics. L.A. Chocolat is an indica-dominant hybrid with a prominent body high. This hybrid has the mood-lifting qualities of a sativa with the sedation of a heavy indica strain. There is heavy trichome production on specific pheno’s of this strain.
Godfather OG won 1st place indica at the 2013 cannabis cup in LA. In 2017, God Father OG broke the previous cannabis cup record of 32.13 percent THC, testing at 34.04 percent. If you’re looking for a strain associated with potency and sedative effects, look no further. Godfather OG will have muscles relaxed and eyelids low after a few puffs.
Blue Cheese is a cross between the popular U.K. Cheese strain and DJ Short’s Blueberry. The effects are sedative, helping patients sleep with ease. This indica strain is ideal for night time use and it regularly tests over 20 percent THC. The scent is somewhere between aging cheese and sweet blueberries.
Crockett from Crockett Family Farms and Guru of Serious Seeds created the popular, multiple award-winning strain Strawberry Banana. They genetically crossed Crockett’s Banana Kush with Guru’s Strawberry phenotype of the Bubble Gum strain. The result is one of the most pleasant smelling sativa-dominant hybrids we’ve ever come across.
Strawberry Banana has made the High Times’ strongest strains on earth list three years in a row with THC levels reaching as high as 31 percent. The strain won multiple first-place awards in the concentrate category of the 2016 SoCal Cannabis Cup.
This list consists of some of the strongest Indica strains we’ve come across here at High Times. They are the best strains for making Rick Simpson Oil based on his recommendation, their indica lineage and the fact that they all regularly test at over 20 percent THC. If you don’t have access to any of the listed strains just look for anything in your area with high THC levels and sedative or indica effects.

not sure if anyone will read this, but it must be said. Rick Simpson did not invent cannabis oil and to put his name on it doesn't mean anything to me at all. We, all my hippi friends and myself, were using ethanol to extract the goodies out of weed back in 1970, yeah huh, you guessed it, it wasn't called RSO (Rick Simpson Oil) back then. Okay, that's out of the way...
Indeed, medicinally many Indicas are perfectly suited for extraction via ethanol, etc. However, cannabis is not just medicinal in nature, well, not for all of us. Myself, recreational and medicinal use are one in the same, but taking specific strains orally (cannacaps) is where I began to experience the most medical benefits. I purchase alcohol extracts and I make my own at home, but I use very specific strains for specific reasons. Unfortunately, there is no way to know if the same benefits are experienced by all unless you try it for yourself. I can tell you this much, limiting myself to a selection of indica or indica dominant hybrids will not happen. I did that at first and wasn't getting the relief I needed from symptoms such as, fatigue, chronic pain, stress, anxiety, ADD/ADHD, etc... Ahhh, this is where a potent sativa or sativa such as Durban Poison, ALASKAN THUNDER FUCK (ATF), Sour Diesel, Lemon Sour Diesel, or a sativa dominant hybrid such as, Dirty Girl or ChemDawg... Indeed, it really has to do with what your symptoms are and why, and YOU.
I believe in the spirit of exploration, especially with cannabis. Do not be afraid to try new methods of consumption and new strains...
In closing, this is an exciting time for cannabis enthusiasts, but in order to fully unlock the mysteries of this legendary plant our government must get out of the way and legalize ASAP. The newest game charger on the block is THCP and its counterpart CBP... Prior to this, it was THCV, which has been dubbed the "Sports Car{ of cannabis. Slowly but surely, we are beginning to understand more and more of the HOW and WHY of this miraculous plant...
why not do your part by experimenting on your own and sharing the results?
Peace,
The Indigenous Alien
Dude you're bang on with what you're saying, the two muppets below have no clue what they're talking about. I myself know that Rick Simpson certainly did not pioneer this idea, in fact he made a potentially dangerous extraction using Naptha, a poisonous alcohol............not good at all. If we can give Rick Simpson any credit it will only be that he highlighted what we can do to extract the highly medicinal oils and other beneficials from the plant, he just replanted the seed again. I hate hearing people giving him all the credit because it's simply not true as they were doing it in the 1800's until early 1900's for mainstream medicines, possibly even before that time too.
Gett over yourself
Agreed, get over yourself.
God bless Rick Simpson, and his real contributions to the cause.
Our hearts go out to a legend and his family, and thank you for all you do.
This article was very informative on the suggestion of strains.
Thank you, Ab Hanna.
