Dog, we gotta stop complaining about the price of good weed. It’s killing the value we hold for a plant that was never meant to be cheap. People have dedicated their lives to making sure the world has this medicine. But seeing $3 1g joints and $15 eighths the first time we walked into a dispensary warped shoppers’ minds into thinking the legal industry was here to give us the world’s best cannabis for a couple pennies and a compliment. We developed an entitlement to low prices, versus an appreciation for high quality. Now, as a result, the OG growers that truly know how to produce that top tier stick ‘n stank are being forced to compete in a race to the bottom with corporations that put out some of the most regular degular, cardboard-tasting, no terps, no punch, having ass weed ever.
It’s ugly, bro. And every time we complain about price, it negates all of the blood, sweat, tears, labor, overhead costs, etc. that went into us even having the choice between some $50/8th super fire and some $20/8th Dirt McGirt.
Why weed is so expensive
It’s not free to grow weed. It’s not free to sell weed. Companies aren’t trying to fuck us; they’re trying to survive. We only assume the former because most people have absolutely no clue how many bases our purchases of high-priced weed have to cover.
There are so many entities that have to eat off of the weed we buy. You’ve got the growers themselves, you’ve got the distros that buy from growers then sell to dispensaries, you’ve got the dispensaries that sell the products to you. All throughout those processes you have overhead costs for producing, manufacturing, processing, packaging, testing, transporting, and selling those products. And along every step of the journey, Big Government is hitting companies over the head with an extreme amount of taxes that leaves most companies in the red before they even get a chance to pay all of these costs. Our purchases quite literally are keeping the lights on for most companies, and that’s very important to know so that we can understand that even with the costs we pay for a bag of green goodness, the costs were still much higher for the people that created it for us.

What we used to pay for weed
We’ve forgotten what life before legalization was like. We’ve forgotten that before you could toss on a Nutella-stained hoodie and run out to a dispensary at 10:43pm to grab a fresh bag of Lemon Cherry OG Kush Gelato Mints #18, you had to blow up a stranger’s phone like a crazy ex-partner until they finally hit you with a “Come thru” 8 hours after the fact. And you did. You did come through. Because you knew if you didn’t right then, your next day would hold the exact same Mission of the Weedless. We’ve forgotten what it was like to meet up at 7-Eleven for a half-ripped grocery bag of What The Fuck Is This from Who The Fuck Knows because your optionless ass was at the mercy of whatever the dealer brought that day. And most importantly, we’ve forgotten that we were always paying $35-$60 just to take these gambles. Our optionless asses always forked up the dough then, so why are we tripping now?
Legalization never promised that it would change the price of the brick, it just promised that you could cop without going to prison. Along with it came the beauties of choice and convenience. That’s what we’re paying for everytime we come out of pocket for some Insane OG.
What we’re paying for now
Freedom, quality, and history. That’s what you’re paying for now when you buy some dank ass weed for a high price. You’re paying for the freedom to buy great weed without getting your face slammed into the pavement, and you’re paying for all of the years of everyday practice it took these expert growers to learn the craft.
Do you know how hard it is to raise a single cannabis plant from seed to sexy? Incredibly. I’m growing plants at home right now and them lil’ babies are looking mad ugly, lemme tell ya. The prices we pay for the good shit is much more than just an exchange of goods, it’s a gesture of appreciation for all of the time it took growers to develop the expertise that has given us all this life-changing medicine. And we’re paying for all of the history that comes with it. Behind some of these big name companies are some legacy growers that built the modern day industry on the foundation of illegal trap shit. Growers who were hiding out in the hills of the Emerald Triangle from helicopters; growers in SoCal that were moving house-to-house creating the art of indoor cultivation; growers that were creating this industry long before the Chads and Tylers even knew weed existed. For all of that risk, time, and expertise, don’t these brands deserve to set an adequate price for high levels of quality?

The state of the cannabis industry
Everybody’s broke, bro. So is the system. Between the endless surplus of cheap dirt weed, the low wholesale prices of cannabis, and the extremely predatory taxes, a lot of your favorite cannabis companies are disappearing simply by getting priced out of the market. It allows some distros to muscle growers into selling for bottom dollar, because at the end of the day, what choice do they have? Make $0 then have to destroy all your old, unsold weed ain’t the answer.
Then you’ve got the lack of education in the industry about what exactly defines good weed. Currently, there are no true scales of quality that force weed buyers (and the market, for that matter) to acknowledge the difference between dirt and delight. Everything moves around low cost and bullshit THC percentages, because the average cannabis consumer doesn’t disregard price, and instead prioritize how your weed is grown, who grew it, how it smells, how it tastes, how the complete experience feels, etc. Higher quality will always come with a higher cost. Additionally, a lot of uneducated consumers still believe that outdoor weed sucks (big false), so you’ve got an entire world of weed that is being disregarded before it even gets the chance to shine. Now, you have some of the best weed ever, that once used to sell for $1,500-$2,000 a pound, selling for $300-$600 a pound. In the end, it’s really fucking up the diversity in the product market, because the brands that should be getting the most money to produce the best products are often the ones on the verge of extinction.
“A lot of us aren’t getting rich, we’re just trying to stay afloat and keep a job at the end of the day,” says Jason Gellman, owner and operator of Ridgeline Farms, when asked about the costs and profits of growing good weed.
Support the brands that care about you
Weed is medicine. That’s all it ever was, that’s all it ever will be. There is no such thing as recreational cannabis. With that knowledge, you should always prioritize putting the best quality of medicine in your body. It’s like choosing organic over GMO foods, the Whole Foods salad bar over Arby’s. Yeah, that Arby’s is cheap as fuck and technically counts as food, but the experience of eating it will leave you feeling like absolute garbage, both mentally and physically. The same standards of quality should hold true for cannabis. The world’s best weed is always going to come from companies that prioritize quality and consumer health over quantity and product sales. Right now, between the state of the industry, the lack of education, and the government’s extremely unjust taxation, shit is looking like only the latter types will survive.
As consumers become more educated on why the difference between high quality craft cannabis and low quality garbage is well worth their money, hopefully the market will correct itself. But by that time, will the best growers and brands still be around? Not if we keep expecting to get filet mignon weed for sirloin tip prices. Not if the government doesn’t get its shit together.

Right. – There is some justification for the extra taxes on alcohol and tobacco. Because of their massive harms to health, they create huge social costs. The extra taxes compensate, at least partially, for those costs.
Science and widespread experience have shown marijuana has no significant harms. Hence, there are no social costs and no real justification for extra taxes. Marijuana taxes are actually a bribe to the initiative/legislation ‘gate keepers’ to not block re-legalization.
But the taxes won’t be such a burden once we get marijuana down to its natural price of about $30 an ounce. 20% of $30 is just $6.00.

I understand the points the writer is making. If cannabis remains a highly controlled substance, even while legal, it will be very expensive for growers to make a profit. Of course, cannabis is remarkably easy to grow. With even a modicum of attention and good seeds anyone (well, almost) can produce excellent weed at very little cost. And this is the current dilemma in which we find ourselves. When cannabis is finally legalized nationally and people can easily grow their own, they will. There will be a boutique market for specialty growers and those who aren’t interested or cannot grow their own.
The company in Canada that won the right to sell cannabis to the EU has a cost of 88 cents per gram. Less than a dollar per gram cost. Less than a dollar per gram to grow… How’s your crypto doing now?

I strongly disagree with your opinion on the price of marijuana. Black market high street prices were set due to the fact that it was illegal and you could go to prison for a long time for selling it if you got busted. This crap about the cost to grow is bullshit and we know it. No one is going to prison now so its time to stop gouging the consumer. This legalized industry has killed a culture. Going to a dispensary is not the same as when we went to our dealers house to buy weed. You could try some before you bought any. You could buy an eighth ounce for $40 a quarter oz for $75, a half oz for $140, and an oz for $260. The weed is the same as your description of high grade OG kush etc… we were buying this long before any one voted on legalized marijuana. Now it’s about time to set the prices on quantity as well as quality. The greed must stop sometime. And when the voters that made this market possible to operate are given the option to make changes to lower the cost of the product and the double taxation, how do think we’ll vote? If the industry flopp’s who cares? We did alright before this was ballot was passed.
Its so easy to grow your own these days, with YouTube and other online venues spelling out exactly how to grow, in both soil and hydrponically (simple deep well culture setups are cheap and super easy), that most folks in legal states shouldn’t need to purchase any. Little learning curve, but If I can do it, anyone can. I spent about 3-5 hundred for initial setup of tent, lights (got full spectrum LEDs…way less heat and tons of light), fan, seeds,, and nutrients, and its been super easy and cheap ever since. Been years now.
Be patient and do not snip early, (even to test it) and also take the time (4 weeks at least) to cure your dried product, and you’ll have stellar outcomes with high yields (especially if growing easy plants like BigBud strain or Northern lights,, which are forgiving strains and grow incredibly easily).
On the odd week I run out, I can usually get some from friends for free, or take a break until my next batch is done. I stopped buying at dispensaries because the prices are ridiculous and are more than what the “black market” sold at….its just greed, like every other capitalistic venture, ruining the industry…these high prices are NOT conducive to a thriving market but they ARE conducive to self growing, for sure!
I saw the writing on the wall here in Massachusetts leading up to legalization. Lots of businessmen looking to secure expensive lisences from the state to grow/distribute/sell. There was a whole industry that popped up training people to enter into the various aspects of the business. All these people with dollar signs in their heads. Then the cities and towns started talking about all the tax revenue they were going fill their coffers with. All the while I’m saying “#1 isn’t the whole point to eliminate the evils of the black market and take it out of the realm of criminal activity? #2 Isn’t the only way to do that is to undercut the price of street weed and have eneryone buying legit weed at dispenseries? How can they do that and get rich and reap huge tax windfalls? And finally #4.. I’m thinking to myself I gorilla farmed absolutely mind blowing potent Northern Lights and Afghani Skunk in Michigan cornfields in the 1990s that cost me close to nothing but the cost of seeds, my time, and the inherent risk with growing an illegal plant. Depending on how I valued my time and the risk… it cost very little a pound to produce. Mother nature provided the rain and the sunshine. The earth provided the nutrients. I came back a few times throughout the summee to top the plants and filled trash bags with super high potency buds in the fall. People seem to forget… It’s a fucking weed for Christ’s sake. It’s harder to kill in the than it is to grow. (the government has unsuccessful tried to irradicate wild hemp Marijuana in Nebraska for decades) It doesnt have to be anymore expensive than any other produce or plant that’s grown in the ground. Cannabis potency is almost completely based on genetics. Horticultural practices have little bearing on potency and more to do with presentation. Junk low thc genetics grown in a lab under ideal conditions is going to produce junk. High thc super potent seeds thrown on the ground, stepped on, and left alone and allowed to grow into a healthy bush will produce extremely potent flower.
If I had the money, the time, and the resources, I would surround a giant field with a double walled prison fence and grow hundreds of thousands of the highest thc producing strain I could find from seed. I’d buy barrels of seeds from Amsterdam. I’d let the sun and the rain do the heavy lifting. And then I’d FLOOD THE MARKET WITH SUPER POTENT CANNABIS AT ROCK BOTTOM PRICES. My cannabis at a couple hundred dollars a pound would set the market price for everyone else. It would go a long way to set things right. And I guarantee I would still make a handsome profit.
The whole idea or goal of decriminalizing cannabis was supposed to be to lower the prices for the consumer. I’m not sure what that price should be but let the market decide and growers, distributors, and retailers need to quit expecting to get rich. A modest profit is an honest profit. It’s just a weed after all.

The writer is a daft nugget. I have been smoking since 93 when I was 13. I have had some of the best and worst weed, imaginable. I have paid some of the worst and the best prices, imaginable. And I am here to tell you that the dispensary weed is a fucking joke. It is overpriced schwag. I have maybe seen a few times where something is of good quality and they were charging 500 an OZ. I can get bud delivered to my house, through the mail at 3USD a gram of Hitman OG 1st gen, from Cali.
I don’t even smoke anymore. I do carts at this point cause I am older and don’t want to torch a rig for concentrates anymore but frankly dispensary pricing and quality is out of control and lacking.
