Carrie Fisher

About a year ago, the American actress, writer and humorist Carrie Fisher died. She played the iconic Princess Leia in Star Wars. She played the role in 1977, 1980 and again in the sequels nearly four decades later.

Fisher passed away in intensive care at the UCLA Medical Center on December 27th, 2016. It wasn’t until June 19th of last year that the full report showed cocaine, MDMA, heroin and other opiates.

Fisher’s daughter issued a statement after the release of the report saying “my mom battled drug addiction and mental illness her entire life. She ultimately died of it. She was purposefully open in all of her work about the social stigmas surrounding these diseases.”

“I know my Mom. She’d want her death to encourage people to be open about their struggles, seek help,” she added. “Fight for government funding for mental health programs. Shame and those social stigmas are the enemies of progress to solutions and ultimately a cure.”
