We had no idea what to expect at Mila’s birthday party, but one thing was certain: anytime you celebrate a birthday for someone called “Amsterdam’s Hash Queen” — in Amsterdam — you know it’s gonna be legit. As we floated into the Melkweg with a few friends around 9:00pm, we began to hear a banging remix of Sister Nancy’s “Bam Bam.” Someone whispered, ”This is a good start.”
Seconds later DJ Nikka T mashed “Bam Bam” into The Stones’ “Get Off My Cloud” and within seconds we were jumping on the dance floor like some sugar-fueled kids in a bouncy house. Nice work homie!
A few minutes later we were treated to a grand entrance by a glittery, marching band-meets-Vegas, motley crew of musicians who mesmerized the crowd with snapping snare drums and bass-heavy blasts.
After the band did their thang, the South Americans hopped on stage and performed an intro of reggae-meets-Guitar Hero-on-a-cruise ship. I wasn’t sure if the singer was trying to be Ali G or French Montana, but it sounded amazing two or three songs in. At some point they even had a bad-ass trumpet player with them on stage as well.
The band then brought up birthday girl Mila on stage to wish her a happy birthday complete with elaborately dressed dancers. Towards the end of the evening a Capoeira troupe began to perform.
All in all, it was a blast to see models, hippies, foodies and freaks all partying on the dance floor together in honor of a true legend. Happy Birthday Mila!
