It is with great sadness that we announce that Charlotte Figi, the namesake and inspiration behind the acclaimed CBD strain Charlotte’s Web, passed away yesterday at age 13.

Charlotte and her twin sister Chase were born on October 18, 2006 in Colorado. Charlotte had a seizure when she was three years old and was subsequently diagnosed with the rare and life-threatening seizure disorder known as Dravet syndrome. She was prescribed a variety of pharmaceuticals, but nothing seemed to work. Her seizures were constant and long-lasting. She was placed in hospice at age five.

Charlotte’s mother, Paige, refused to take her daughter’s diagnosis lying down. She researched her disorder, related disorders, and eventually found a Brazilian study about epilepsy and cannabidiol. In 2011, she embarked on a journey to get ahold of a supply of CBD and track down growers who cultivated it. At this point in time, CBD was rarely discussed, even in the cannabis space. But the stars aligned, and Paige was finally approached by professional cannabis grower Joel Stanley. They worked together to create a high-CBD, low-THC strain—when Paige administered the resulting oil, Charlotte went from having 300 seizures a week to a few episodes a month. It was a dramatic improvement that no one had anticipated.

Paige became an advocate for not only her own daughter, but for other children suffering from intractable epilepsy. Charlotte, in addition to finding relief from her seizures, became the poster child of CBD and was featured in pro-cannabis documentaries and in our own Female 50 issue of High Times this past November.

Charlotte’s passing is devastating to all who knew her and to all who found hope and inspiration though her. We extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Charlotte’s family and friends.

  1. RIP little Charlotte. You were an inspiration to millions and God only knows how many lives were touched and saved by you and your family. God Bless and grant Peace to the Figi family.

  2. 🙏’s to ALL of Charlotte’s family. I have followed Charlotte’s’Web’ since it’s inception. She will live in my Heart, Mind, and Soul ForEVER…as will her amazingly diligent Family. BE at Peace Charlotte…Your Life IS a Blessing to ALL Mankind 😇.

  3. I had stumbled across an article about Charlotte’s struggles and WAS anti-drug ANYTHING! It was then after reading about her numerous amount of seizures I began my research into what cannabis can do and was blown away. Blown away by her miracle, I was happy that her special strain of CBD helped her with her illness and she was able to live for as long as she did.

Today I am a big advocate of CBD, and as a Massage Therapist utilizing CBD I have seen the affects of what CBD can do to the body almost instantly relieving pain for my clients.

She is no longer in pain, and I pray for her and her family during this hard and unforgettable time. May you live forever Charlotte for you were such an inspiration to a non-believer!

  4. 041520: I appologize for appearing insensitive or naive, but if Charlotte was doing so great, with CBD… How & what was the reason for her death within this past week at only 13 years old???

  5. @ Grammy she was on hospice at 5 years old. if your not familiar they send hospice when they think your going to Die. she lived EIGHT extra years with a lot less seizures . Also to live 8 extra years in pain would not be a blessing but 8 extra years in a manageable life in a lil bit of comfort and less pain with family NOW Thats The Blessing
