A newly released report shows that one city smokes more weed than any other. Can you guess which city it is? Here are three hints.

It’s a major metropolis on the East Coast in the United States. It’s known for housing artists, musicians and business tycoons alike. It has a reputation for being “the city that never sleeps”.

We’re talking, of course, about New York City. And this city smokes more weed than any other city in the world. But before we get into the specifics, let’s talk about the four runner-ups for cannabis consumption.

5. Cairo, Egypt

The city with the fifth highest rate of cannabis consumption in the world is Cairo, Egypt. Marijuana and its sticky cousin hashish are officially illegal in Egypt. Even writing about it could be risky.

Two years ago, the Egyptian author Ahmed Naji was prosecuted for writing about hashish in one of his novels. Although it wasn’t even a prominent theme, he served 10 months of a two-year prison sentence.

Last year, the residents of Cairo smoked 32.59 metric tons of cannabis. As Naji told The Guardian in an interview, “sex and drugs play a very important part in Cairo.”
