NBA Players Call for League to Legalize Medical Marijuana

Last week, NBA star Kevin Durant was caught on video dropping what appeared to be medical marijuana while leaving a Los Angeles club. Considering that 23 states have legalized cannabis for medicinal purposes and that the NBA prohibits any type of pot use, TMZ Sports decided to find out what players thought of the NBA’s drug policy.

Ten out of 10 active league players (all asked to remain anonymous), thought that the NBA’s pot policy was outdated.

“How can you tell a guy with a prescription not to use it,” one player told TMZ Sports. “They should be allowed to have their medicine.”

“The NBA shouldn’t advertise for it, but I don’t see an issue if a player uses,” another said.

According to Complex, currently, players who test positive for weed are subject to a five-game suspension for a first offense and a mandatory entrance into the league’s substance abuse program.

The NBA Players Associated has stated that if players feel strongly enough, the issue could be addressed at the next collective bargaining session in 2017.
