Why is Blue Dream the Most Popular Strain of Legal Weed?

A recent article by Julia Wright at Civilized called Why 'Blue Dream' Was The #1-Seller In Both Colorado And Washington, referencing this study from BDS Analytics revealed that Blue Dream was the best selling strain in both Colorado and Washington in 2015. It’s an interesting finding that they attribute mostly to the marketing of the strain. But, perhaps there’s more to Blue Dream’s popularity than just simple branding…

It comes as no surprise that Blue Dream is a top seller as the strain has been quite popular in California for many years as well. So popular that, of course, there are also many Blue Dream haters out there who won’t smoke it for various reasons.

When grown properly, Blue Dream can be quite a treat. The problem is that it’s typically so mass-produced that it suffers in quality and also has the distinction of becoming so ubiquitous and familiar, that some connoisseurs dismiss it outright. It certainly doesn’t pack the punch of OG Kush or Girl Scout Cookies but there’s something about Blue Dream that people continue to love.

Growers rave about how Blue Dream is so easy to grow and also a big yielder. Two pounds per 1000-watt light is a fairly standard indoor harvest for Blue Dream and she’s notoriously resistant to powdery mildew (PM). Clones of Blue Dream also root quickly and consistently as well, making it a cultivators dream plant to grow.

Another reason for this variety’s popularity among growers is that she’s a clone-only strain that isn’t hoarded or claimed by one particular group. Blue Dream is considered more “open sourced” and cuttings are easy to find. Blue Dream is also a great strain to make concentrates from, with a scent and flavor of sandalwood incense and blueberries.

Lab testing has found that Blue Dream is high in several interesting terpenes including myrcene, terpinolene and caryophyllene. The strain acts as a bronchodilator and works great to soothe headaches, anxiety and even depression.

Women and people over 40 also love it. Anecdotal evidence reveals that it helps with cramping and other menstrual symptoms. The cerebral high, not too strong but quite uplifting, helps those of us who’ve lost a step or two motivate ourselves to be productive and artistic. In other words Blue Dream is a classic daytime strain for someone seeking inspiration.

Or maybe it could be Juicy J’s “Blue Dream and Lean” that made the strain so popular? Perhaps we’ll never know…

  • I grow blue dream outdoor/indoor in Hawaii. With additional lighting, it's not that difficult to grow 3 pound plus trees of this strain. You know what they say, if you can't beat em, join em. Maybe it's really popular, and the hardcore smokers may be bored, but to me it's like a washington apple, common - but good.
