Seven Habits of Highly Effective Pot Growers by Danny Danko

Fri, Aug 01, 2008 12:12 pm

-

Beware of short cuts and quick fixes that minimize the hard work and focus required to prosper. An effective ganja garden always satisfies the needs of the grower who maintains the following seven important rules of conduct.

Cleanliness:

Proactivity isn’t just a boardroom cliché. Simple tasks such as picking up dead leaves and sweeping up debris shouldn’t wait until piles have accumulated. It’s a daily process that requires due diligence and leaves no time for slacking.

Never allow pools of water to collect on the floor or under your plants. Check all surfaces daily for telltale signs of pests or molds, including the tops and bottoms of leaves, the surface of your growing medium, and the walls, ceiling and floor in your space. Change clothes before entering your growroom, especially if you’ve been outdoors recently. Some growers I’ve met have outfits by the door reserved for growroom use only.

Above all, make it your mission to keep things clean. Your indoor garden is your laboratory, as well as your income provider, and will benefit tremendously when habitually kept spotless. Put down the bong, get off the couch and clean your growroom top to bottom. The work you do now will surely pay off in the end.

Stealth:

When it comes to your garden, whether medical or not, silence is always golden. It’s tempting to brag and show off your hard work but it can only lead to problems down the road. Growers who live “out in the open” tend to be the ones easily targeted by police and thieves.

Never throw big parties or let people hang out all day smoking weed and don’t have traffic coming in and out all the time. Suspicious stuff like this has been the downfall of many a pot prospector. Create the illusion that you’re invisible and harmless to neighbors and simply another citizen going about your life. Whether purchasing lighting, moving equipment into your chosen space or interacting with locals, it always helps to keep a low profile.

By the same token, don’t allow yourself to become too paranoid. Freaky behavior such as blocking off all your windows or avoiding interaction with neighbors is a tip off that something’s not right. Be friendly but not too friendly. Never panic or antagonize those around you – keeping the peace is always in your best interests if you want successful harvest after harvest.

Realistic Expectations:

Of course it’s important to be goal oriented, but never count pounds before they’re grown. Too many farmers spend time guessing the final weight of their crops only to be disappointed when the real tally doesn’t match their hopes.

Try to ignore this tempting impulse and set your goals wisely and realistically. You’re not going to get 4 pounds per 1000-watt lamp every time out of the gate, no matter how great you grow. You’ll need to lower those outlandish kinds of expectations in order to maintain your motivation at all times, good and bad. A realistic grower considers many factors and weighs the pros and cons of all decisions and possible outcomes.

Rent, electric and various equipment costs must be acknowledged and accounted for before embarking on a serious growing project. And unforeseen costs and glitches in scheduling and timing can quickly add up to thousands of dollars in expenses and months lost in unanticipated delays. Knowing and properly anticipating these type of events can be the difference between long-term success and season after season of frustration.

Attentiveness to Plant Needs:

Cannabis as a cultivar isn’t all that hard to please. Ask an orchid or African violet grower if you want a better understanding of fussy plants and how frustrating it can be to provide them with everything they need. You’ll find that there’s a good reason people call marijuana “weed.”

Pot plants want to grow and will do just about anything to survive harsh environments. The idea is to provide the proper atmosphere at all times and severely limit fluctuations in temperature, feeding and airflow. In this way, you avoid the stress that can cause devastating delays in growth or worse. Be meticulous!

Read books on cultivation (not just cannabis books) and pay attention to the theory as well as the execution. Understanding all elements of plant growth is an absolutely necessary skill that can’t be fudged for too long without problems arising. Pay attention to nutritional requirements during the various stages and act accordingly. Your final results will astound you!

Curiosity:

Never decide that your way is the best or only way to grow great buds. You should always stay on the lookout for new techniques and new strains to satisfy your inquisitive nature and expand your pot palette. Too many growers get bogged down by their own stubborn nature and decide to stick to their guns regarding everything they’ve learned up until that point, when the idea is to challenge yourself always and keep your ear to the ground for new ideas.

This means experimenting from time to time. If something new can raise your yield by even 5 percent, that’s a substantial increase in efficiency that you can continue to build upon and tweak. The curious grower never discounts new ideas, equipment or techniques without proper analysis.

A good experiment won’t endanger your whole grow. Try a new nutrient on one plant and see how it responds. Always be measured and patient without allowing yourself to become wary of all new techniques. Expert growers learn something new with every harvest. The key to staying ahead of the curve is to allow your curiosity to flourish.

Patience:

Many a promising garden’s been torn down prematurely either due to financial troubles, paranoia or family obligations. Sometimes even greed can rear its ugly head, causing profit margins to become more important than pot perfection. Plants must complete their life cycle to fulfill their true destiny and it’s your responsibility as a cannabis grower to do everything in your power to make that happen.

Don’t let impatience cloud your vision. You didn’t expend all that energy only to jump the gun and harvest a crop that never got a chance to reach it’s true potential. Sure, it still might get people high, but did you really need that dough or vacation bad enough to yank your harvest too soon?

Patience means you’re in this thing for the long haul, not the quick score. Plant a few long-flowering sativas once in a while and you’ll find that the extra time spent develops into more complex flavors and highs.

Same thing goes for drying and curing. Freshly chopped pot plants are about 70 percent liquids and it will take some time to properly remove that water-weight. Quickly dried buds taste poorly and smoke even worse. Take your time and you’ll be rewarded with a final product worthy of your efforts.

Humility:

Remember, it’s not a contest. We all love the same plant and there’s hundreds of ways to grow her right. Arrogant growers love to put down other people’s nugs and argue for days about how nobody can produce better pot than them. These types actually end up infusing some of that negative and competitive energy into their plants.

If you love what you’re doing, you’re already winning. Take pride in your agricultural accomplishments but never become the “human buzz-kill” personality, always seeking to one-up all comers. It’s boring and you’re compromising the integrity of people’s highs. Let your buds speak for themselves and the company you enjoy will enjoy themselves too. Above all, remember that fame is fleeting and real cannabis aficionados show enthusiasm and encouragement to all that share our beloved hobby.

Tony, your seeds will be fine. Contrary to most morons beliefs that you cant grow good weed from seeds u get in a bag of schwag is just simply untrue. The truth of the matter is that most marijuana grown in mexico (which is where most schwag comes from) is acctually from top quality genetics. They are just grown outdoors and few if any males are ever pulled; not to mention no fertilizer was prolly ever used either. What i would suggest to you though is to invest in a better lighting system. You had mentioned that your using 600 watts but of what light spectrum? what kind of bulb? since there are two brightness's i doubt its anything of quality. Also, how many plants are you growing? If its a small op with 8 plants or less a 400 watt will be completely sufficient, and if your looking just to grow a couple plants maybe look into getting a 250 watt. I would recommend to get an HPS fixture and balast so that you can kill two birds with one stone. Considering you can get metal halide conversion bulbs that will work with your HPS system but that does not work the other way around; which would essentially cost you an additional 250 dollars. In addition, make sure you have proper air flow in your room. Now if it were me i would be doing quite a bit to get this done, but it seems like for your purposes ur trying to keep it basic. So, just get a powerful fan that can blow on your plants 24 hours consistantly which will also strengthen your plants stalks. I think i have covered what you were asking but i will keep on checkin this post incase u have anymore questions during your grow i am always happy to help!

In most cases males will always show up, but it can be to your benefit. You will not have to worry about where your next crop will come from and you will be in control of the type of weed you produce. You will have to watch the time cycle and DO NOT change it when you set it to start the flowering cycle. Cheap lamps means more power used(as well as some mhp and the higher end lights). The one thing you will have watch is your power bill and any water leaks as well as the smell when they do get ready to harvest. As it has been stated before by most...outdoors is best, you will loose some resin quality but the true earth taste and smooth smoke will give you a buzz to remember.

If you use clones, the buds in time will become smaller with each generation of clones. I use clones for one reason and only once per batch. That is for the gene pool and my own personal seed bank. Number each pot and keep notes on each one and be choosy with the plants you keep, after all, it will be your high for life as long as you keep your seed bank fresh every 3 years. You will loose 10% of the seeds after the first year and the longer you keep the older seeds the less chance they will grow.

Good Luck and maintain your own seed bank not just for your pride but your well being and protection.

Hi everyone.I Just started planting about a week ago
and my plants have come up and looks in great shape.
Anyways, i have a 600 watt lamp i use for it and theres two levels of brightness that i can turn on. I was wondering
if the higher level of brightness i have on the plant will effect the quality of the bud.

Another thing i was wondering if i used seeds from crappy weed
is it possible to grow a decent product from it or will i end up with the same crappy weed for sure?

in regards to dancintharain comments: I have ordered seeds twice from two seperate companies. The first was Nirvana seeds from Netherlands. It came in a an actual seed envelope concealed with in a jewel case. The second time was from a company in germany that sells lots of different brands. I ordered Nirvana white rhino from them and they came wrapped in a tiny stamp bag, concealed b/w a piece of cardboard and a floppy disk. It took me a few days to find them, I almost threw them away. Very stealth. The ones from Nirvana directly we're not the same strain, mostly males (8/10) I ended up getting 30 gr. off one plant. I had similar results with the second set of seeds, but mostly due to error. I grew in my closet with 3 $16 plant growth lights from wal-mart. I guess my point is you're not going to jail. The DEA thought for a while they could get prosecutions for people ordering seeds. But all they could possibly be charged for is possession of marijuana, the judge consider them mostly a novelty item. So no, the feds are not coming for you, your name hasn't be recorded. The US Customs sorts through mail not only for bulk drugs (pills, powders) but for plants that are regulated for ecological reasons. They consider cannabis seeds, whether hemp seeds for birds or feminized, the same as banned invasive species. You get the same letter as everyone else. The only reason I know this is b/c I read it in a law journal in class.

I Have a question however, I'd like to have more success growing b/c I have to get schwag now and I'm spending a ton of money. I don't want to order seeds, I have a about 30 bag seeds from the most decent bags I've had (7 came from an ounce of what I was told romulan x pine berry). So I think I have potential for good genetics if I weed out the males early, is this correct? I don't want anything perpetual. I already have an air purifier for odor control and for 1-2 previous plants it worked fine, my closet stunk but once the doors were closed it was fine. I used a small house fan and jugs of water/yeast for co2. I used a plant food from miracle grow and followed accordingly. The first time so many males was the problem, second time bugs and just wilting and fast death? I want to spend near nothing (not over $250-$300 in 4 mos.) and I'd like to harvest somewhere around 100 grams. Does anyone have any suggestions???

Wait until the hairs turn color (red, Brown) for about 70% percent of each branch. Different branches can mature @ different times, being a day to a few. Dont rub the buds because you are taking off valuable resin from the plant. That's just how I feel about it. Remember let it cure RIGHT. You start smoking and/or selling too fast you'll find toward the end of the sack that would be the best smoke. Because you could'nt wait you'll have wet ass weed that isn't getting you as high .PEACE

mynameismud, you don't want to put fruit juice in your water. I am assuming you are looking for an added flavor to your bud. A method I experimented with a long time ago involved pushing a heavy needle with a fairly heavy cotton string through the base of the plant a week or two before harvest. Then I wicked flavored essential oils, the kind used in candy making, into the plant. I made peppermint and almond flavors and it worked ok. Fruit juice will throw your PH way off as well as introduce other unwanted elements to your water.

Even after reading most of this info i still need someone to please explain in kindergarten terms: How to identify male vs. female? How long before budding? and Is it possible to just throw good seeds on the ground and just let nature take it's course? I smoke outdoors on my own property and quite by accident have started a good size garden about six weeks old? What do i do now? I would hate to do an injustice to these babies? After all they didn't ask to be born?

Absolutley right on. Your info is amazing at times. I always love to read what you have to write. Youve always helped from my first crop to my last one. My nugs are always the best because of you. Not because you get blasted everytime i smoke (cause you do) but because first i k.i.s.s. and then i share and enjoy sharing my harvests with the needy, not greedy.
