Friends and family of Jeff Mizanskey gathered outside the Jefferson City Correctional Center at around 7 am in anticipation of his release. Early reports indicated that he would have his freedom between 8 and 10 am, but David Owen, Communications Director with the Missouri Department of Corrections, told High Times that it would be closer to 7:30 am.

At 7:42 am, Mizanskey exited general population and stepped into the lobby of the prison a free man. A crowd of loved ones and supporters, including state lawmakers and marijuana activists, erupted in cheers the moment he walked through the door.

A press conference was held outside the prison. Mizanskey told High Times that his releases was like a “dream” and that he planned to use his newfound freedom to campaign for the legalization of marijuana, so that no one else is ever forced to endure the hell he has suffered.

After the press conference, Mizanskey and his family met for lunch at the Town Grill in Jefferson City. High Times sat down with Mizanskey outside the restaurant for some final thoughts. Read what he had to say in the January 2016 issue.

Mizanskey has to meet with his parole officer in 24 hours. He is set to make a number of appearances across the state in the coming months to tell his story.
