Americans Support Getting High In Private

When it comes to the legalization of recreational marijuana, a narrow majority of the American people are all for it, according to the latest HuffPost/YouGov poll. However, while most agree the time has come for the federal government to repeal pot prohibition, a larger percentage of these people do not have any desire to see people smoke pot in public.

The latest poll indicates that nearly 50 percent of the American populous support efforts to legalize the leaf, with the percentage increasing to 55 percent when asked if they would support a taxed and regulated marijuana market in their state similar to the legislation passed in Colorado and Washington.

“Sixty-two percent of Democrats and 60 percent of independents, but only 37 percent of Republicans, said they would support a marijuana legalization law like the ones in Colorado and Washington,” according to The Huffington Post.

However, while most Americans would side with their state’s decision to implement a system for recreational marijuana, the issue gains significant traction for legislation prohibiting people from toking in public places. An impressive 66 percent of Americans reported they would stand by a measure to legalize weed in their state, as long as it limited the consumption of marijuana to private residences.

This sentiment appears to be the consensus across the board, regardless of political affiliation, with the majority of Democrats, Republicans and Independents agreeing that marijuana use should not be allowed in places like public sidewalks, parks and bars.

“Only 15 percent of respondents said it should be legal to smoke marijuana on a public sidewalk, while 18 percent said it should be legal to light up in a public park. Twenty-five percent said they supported legal marijuana consumption in bars.” However, nearly 60 percent of the respondents agreed it would be acceptable if marijuana were used in private clubs.

The latest HuffPost/YouGov poll was complied using of a sample of 1,000 US adults of varying demographics.
