New Brunswick has some of the strictest marijuana laws in Canada. So far, lawmakers have banned smoking in public places. Residents will have to store marijuana in locked containers or in a locked room in their homes. However, there is no limit on how much marijuana you can have at home. On your person, you can only carry the federal limit of 30 grams.
New Brunswick is set to open 20 marijuana retail locations in time for national legalization, as reported by CBC News.
Drivers suspected of using marijuana while driving will face an intensive, three-step test. First, the amended Motor Vehicle Act will allow authorities to test saliva for THC. This could be a problem in court because THC can stay in your system for weeks. The second test is walking in a straight line. The third option is a blood test.
The law mandates harsh punishments for driving under the influence of marijuana. One of the penalties is having your vehicle impounded. Drivers convicted of driving while high would have to pay to reinstate their licenses. Penalties will be especially tough for anyone under 21.
Trends may reflect some success in highway safety, but additional research is needed.
