Sometimes, you’re lucky to have a mom that hits that sweet spot between stern enough to ensure you grow up well and lax enough to let you have some fun.
In honor of Mother’s Day this Sunday, we salute the celebrity moms that have gone on record with their coolness.
1 – Whoopi Goldberg
Mom To: Alex Martin (43)
Just How Cool Is She? Goldberg launched a medical marijuana product line specifically aimed at women with severe menstrual cramps, so pretty damn cool. She also wrote a column for The Cannabist about her love of her vape pen.
2 – Susan Sarandon
Mom To: Miles Robbins (24), Jack Henry Robbins (27), Eva Amurri (32)
Just How Cool Is She? The actress, most recently seen in FX’s Feud, has long been a pot advocate, and spoke to High Times about exactly that in 2015. Most relevant quote: “I’ve said in print that I would rather have my kids smoking weed than drinking.” Miles, Jack, Eva—take note.
3 – Madonna

Just How Cool Is She? Back in 1994, Madonna famously dropped more than a dozen f-bombs on David Letterman at the Ed Sullivan Theater. When discussing the incident in 2009, Madge told Letterman, “It wasn’t because I was excited about you.I think it may have had something to do with the joint I smoked before I came on.” The Queen of Pop might be TOO cool of a mom, though—Rocco was arrested last year for marijuana possession at 16 years old.
4 – Martha Stewart
Mom To: Alexis Stewart (51)
Just How Cool Is She? Stewart brings her culinary craftiness to marijuana, creating a Statue of Liberty made out of weed with Conan in 2002. Then there’s Martha and Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party, which pairs her with Snoop Dogg to create a variety of foods with rappers from 50 Cent to Ice Cube to 2 Chainz. Sadly, no, the two have never smoked together—according to Snoop, “I’ve smoked around her, but she don’t partake.”
5 – Melissa Etheridge
Mom To: Bailey Jean Cypher (20), Beckett Cypher (18), Miller Steven Etheridge (10), Johnnie Rose Etheridge (10)
Just How Cool Is She? The singer, who has said marijuana helped her through breast cancer and performed at the 2016 High Times Michigan Cannabis Cup, is starting a cannabis line for her company, Etheridge Farms. She even recently admitted to CNN that she’s smoked weed with her two oldest kids, Bailey and Beckett. How much cooler can you get?
6 – Megan Fox
Mom To: Noah Shannon Green (4), Bodhi Ransom Green (3), Journey River Green (8 months)
Just How Cool Is She? Fox is apparently quite the fan and advocate of marijuana. When speaking to GQ in 2009, she had some particularly strong words about the War on Drugs: “It’s all propaganda. I can’t tell you how much bullshit I’ve been through because I will openly say that I smoke weed… People look at it like it’s this crazy, hippy, fucked-up thing to do. And it’s not! I hope they legalize it and when they do I’ll be the first fucking person in line to buy my pack of joints.” We’ll be right there with you.
7 – Barbara Streisand
Mom To: Jason Gould (50)
Just How Cool Is She? A quote from an interview with Rolling Stone in 1972, in which Babs discussing performing live, shows just how cool she is: “I’d take out a joint and light it. First, just faking it, then I started lighting live joints, passing them around to the band, you know. I was great. It relieved all my tensions.”
8 – Frances McDormand
Mom To: Pedro McDormand Coen (23)
Just How Cool Is She? McDormand is the only celebrity on this list to have graced our cover, and noted in that same issue, “I’m a recreational pot-smoker,” which makes her one of the coolest moms around.
9 – Alanis Morissette
Mom To: Ever Imre Morissette-Treadway (6), Onyx Solace Morissette-Treadway (1)
Just How Cool Is She? Morisette told High Times that smoking weed often helps with the creative process: ”I’ve often felt telepathic and receptive to inexplicable messages my whole life. I can stave those off when I’m not high. When I’m high—well, they come in and there’s less of a veil, so to speak. So if ever I need some clarity… or a quantum leap in terms of writing something, it’s a quick way for me to get to it.”
10 – Lily Allen
Mom to: Marnie Rose Cooper (4), Ethel Cooper (5)
Just How Cool Is She? She was quite a smoker when she was younger: “I smoked my first spliff when I was 15. (Mum’s) a busybody, and I hated that when I was younger, and I smoked a lot of weed.” Maybe that’s not very cool (wait till you’re 18, folks), but she’s been seen lately with suspicious looking rolled joints, so it’s likely Momma Allen is still tokin’ on.
11 – Anna Faris
Mom To: Jack Pratt (4)
Just How Cool Is She? First of all, she’s married to Chris Pratt, and the two of them together are probably the coolest couple in Hollywood. In 2007, High Times awarded her the honor of Stonette of the Year, the award for which (it’s a bong) she’s noted she occasionally uses.
12 – Drew Barrymore
Mom To: Olive Barrymore Kopelman (4), Frankie Barrymore Kopelman (3)
Just How Cool Is She? Cool enough. Barrymore was once photographed sharing a joint with friend Cameron Diaz, so it would be safe to assume she might still partake. That being said, a prop specialist on Barrymore’s 2010 movie Going the Distance recently told Refinery29 that Barrymore smoked fake weed and was convinced she got high off of it—so either Drew is smoking some shitty weed or she’s just not part of the club. (We love you, though, so all is forgiven.)
13 – Natalie Portman
Mom To: Aleph Portman-Millepied (5), Amalia Millepied (3 months)
Just How Cool Is She? Portman has starred in several stoner comedies, and she used to be a toker, telling EW: “I love stoner comedies. I smoked weed in college.” Sadly, that was followed up with, “But I haven’t in years. I’m too old. I wish I was that cool, but I’m like an old lady now. I’m in bed by 10 p.m. I can’t do that anymore.” Those comments were made before her first child, and with newborn Amalia here, it’s unlikely that’s changed. We still love ya, Natalie.
14 – Charlize Theron
Mom To: Jackson Theron (5), August Theron (1)
Just How Cool Is She? While Theron has never commented on her weed usage, the above photo of her smoking through an apple bong is more than enough evidence. Apple bongs aren’t something inexperienced smokers would be using, either—we can infer from her choice of instrument that she’s been around this particular block a few times.
