“Welcome to Psychedelicatessen, a weekly column exploring the world of cannabis cuisine, including recipes from the great chefs and ganjapreneurs who fuel our appetite for adventure.”
As the California cannabis industry matures and expands, more customers are seeking healthy options, several of which won big at the 2015 High Times NorCal Medical Cannabis Cup.
Maya Lapid, founder of Om Edibles, took a third place for her Cinnamon Maple Tree Hugger coated nuts, along with a first place for Raw CBD Sipping Cacao.
“I predicted this year was about super foods!” Lapid exclaimed. “I wanted to make something healthy and delicious, gluten free and vegan, that had a long shelf life.”
Gradually, the tide is turning against the standard medicated dessert, like brownies and rice krispy treats, and more dispensaries are making room on their shelves for healthier options. When Lapid brings her wares to stores, she emphasizes “how every ingredient brings something to the table,” so that the healing benefits of the medicine are amplified.
Lapid’s all-female collective also produces topicals and tinctures, including a version of the holy anointing oil mentioned in the Bible. Om Edibles’ Indica tincture includes additional herbs like lavender and chamomile, while the Sativa blend uses ginger and echinacea to create a synergistic healing effect.
When designing her Cannabis Cup winning edibles, a collaboration with Gold Drop Concentrates allowed Lapid to coat almonds and pecans with cannabis extract, maple syrup, hemp seeds, cinnamon and salt to create Tree Hugger nuts.
“It was a total luxury to work with a concentrate like that,” Lapid said. “It’s super-quantitative and easy to calculate in milligrams, so it freed me up to choose a recipe without much butter or fat.”
Cannabis is such a positive, life-affirming substance with many medicinal benefits, so it makes sense to pair it with foods that contribute to an overall feeling of vitality. “Superfoods” are items that are nutrient dense with important vitamins and minerals, including whole foods like kale, hemp, salmon, blueberries and cacao.
“Once people see how each ingredient contributes an important benefit, they’re much more likely to try it,” Lapid said, explaining how more patients are seeking out healthy options.

Super Sensi Oatmeal
Oatmeal is high in soluble fiber which lowers harmful cholesterol, along with maintaining a satisfied fullness for many hours. Coconut oil is full of healthy fats that help your body eliminate toxins while also improving cell and brain function. Both Chia Seeds and Hemp Seeds are nutrient dense superfoods that contain omegas 3 and 6, vitamins, minerals, protein, and fiber. Chia seeds are hydroliphic (meaning water loving), absorbing water and helping to hydrate your body. Raw honey strengthens your immune system, provides quick energy, and contains a unique blend of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, antioxidants, and phytonutrients. (A vegan alternative would be maple syrup.) Sea salt is rich in minerals and trace nutrients, while cinnamon helps with circulation, is packed with antioxidants, and has antimicrobial properties.
